A lot of the ADSL/Broadband providers have a post code lookup to tell you what's potentially available in your area.

Google

For someone who is constantly commenting on computer threads, reccomending software, advising/commenting on specs of PC's - it baffles me that you wouldn't simply type what you want to know into Google : Google is my first port of call for info, if I can't find it, I THEN ask.....

All they do is say "up to x BPS" and that's worthless. The speed (or lack of it) is mainly to do with your distance to the phone exchange If you live in a village like I do, chances are your nearest one's miles away, and there's no chance of one being setup nearer to you.

Nor can BT help, they're the most useless bunch of idiots I've ever had to deal with. Half the staff don't even know how to answer the phone.

One thing to bear in mind is that your ISP will state that your Broadband is a certain speed - if you do regular speed checks (speedcheck.ispconnect.co.uk/) and find that yours is way slower, ring up and get money off your bill!

I'd have to google it (again) cos I forget the name of the site, but it tells you by postcode how far you are from the local exchange and what speed you should get. My mums house is 2.5miles from the exchange and will only be able to get a max of 3.5mb

Being so close to the exchange, it'll possibly be down to the type of equipment in the exchange - it's not just location/distance from the said exchange that affects speed, as that's very close in the scheme of things. Another possibility is you are on a high contention ratio, and everyone around you hammers their internet 24/7.

There's a site somewhere where you and others can 'petition/show your interest' to BT for a specific exchange/area, so they can see if it's worthwhile upgrading the switches etc in the exchange - wouldn't hold your breath though - BT have done more to keep the UK in the dark ages re: 'Broadband Britain' than anyone else Probably still got the arse over having to rent out their lines to other providers, lol.

Can't remember the site in question, but know my mate has it bookmarked, as he lives in a rural location.

BT are rolling out faster infrastructure to the whole country. It is called Bt21CN which aims to move onto ADSL 2 specs.

http://www.btplc.com/21CN/

The site says 2011 is when everybody will have it, but BT are massively behind schedule on this.

yeah im sure there was a petition floating around a year ago, clearly that didnt take off

But where i live its only a small villiage and even the other small villiage down the road(the one where the exchange is) doesnt have that many houses, and mose of those are old folk so i dout were "hammering" much.

I understand that - I had to have the same "info" before I found the answers. I retract my statement and apologise - I guess it's down to how you a) figure out your info and b) process it before you can obtain answers. I didn't seem to have a problem working it out - hence how I found the answers

Funnily enough, just to test it I typed in "how do I find out when my internet speed will be upgraded" and funnily enough - I got the information I was after THAT was hard wasn't it

Guess it goes to show you DON'T actually need any intelligence to get answers fro google

Taken from O2 broaband web site:

Subject to availability, BT line and min term contract. Speed varies depending on factors including distance from the exchange. Calls are free from UK landlines and O2 mobiles. Fair usage policy applies. O2 Email to Mobile and O2 Contacts only available to O2 mobile customers. Money back guarantee available on contracts signed before 31/03/08. Click here for other terms.

GTi iTG - it wasn't an internet type petition, but something BT themselves were doing prior to upgrading exchanges (i.e. if they could make money, they'd upgrade the exchange sooner, lol) - can't find it on their site now though - I believe BB providers were also doing a similar thing and were then supplying the info to BT Wholesale...There used to be a list of exchange upgrade rollout dates published every so often too.

From what you've said, your exchange probably isn't as up to date as it could be, but as it provides BB (albeit at the low end) I doubt they'll be in a rush to upgrade for a small no. of customers anytime soon.

Matt, trouble is plenty of 'super duper' new internet offers start off that way, but they do normally add one

I couldn't actually find the fair use policy, so your probably correct in saying they don't have one yet, but as they reference it in their terms I think that's a bit crap - you're agreeing to a document that isn't seemingly publically available

Gti.... I'd still persue it if I were you, you may get some good news (you never know, lol) - have you had your line checked for errors / do you categorically know that that's your DL limit?

Your provider is probably best first port of call (BT probably won't be bothered if you aren't 'their' customer, even though your provider would have to go through BT for a line test if needed) - just don't let them fob you off without a proper answer as to why your speed is so slow for such a short distance from the exchange.

I am a Broadband engineer for BT or Openreach as we are now called, another division of BT, distance is the main factor but also depends what cable make up you are on eg: Copper/aluminum sometimes ,which isn't good for BB,also conductor size normally 0.5mm but sometimes 0.4mm which will givw a greater DB loss. The worst jobs are out in the sticks where people are 8k away from exchanges, can spend a whole day changing pairs & re wiring internal & all sorts just to try & get sync at 300kbps or so ! I look at line loss problems day in day out but i've never checked my own line as i couldn't care less what the speed is as long as it works, but then i don't have to pay for my broadband

Simon.

You keep harping on about the distance you are from the exchange, and then keep saying you will ring them - did you even bother to follow the links I give you that will tell you what you can expect? I mean, 1) I don't understand why you need to ask to obtain information freely available on the net, but 2) I don't understand why when GIVEN the information, you don't use it?!?!?!

I did everything you want to do for my mother;

http://www.dslzoneuk.net/distance.php - 2.66k from the exchange

http://freeola.com/broadband/broadba...lity-check.php - expected max speed of 3.5mb

I don't understand how it is hard?
