Default Smoke when backing off? Turbo or rings?

Curse of the feature car re-appeared today!

Bit of blue smoke went letting off throttle, no smoke any time else, car drives perfectly and boosts perfectly.

More likely to be turbo or something more worrying? i.e. Pistons rings?

Any easy way to tell as I havent got access to a compression tester until monday!

Thanks!

a compression tester wont always show up worn oil rings as compression rings are above them, smoke on over-run is normally fooked turbo seals

Blue smoke I would guess at valve stem seals.

I have fucked loads of turbos and mine have always let go with loads of white smoke never blue.

Have you pulled the rocker cover to see if you can spot crispy valve stem seal through the valve springs?

Good luck either way matey!

3 times ive had lots of blue smoke when lifting off. turbo seals each time.
isnt blue smoke when idling or start up more likely to be stem seals?

Thanks for the help guys!

Rat8oy - Well it's bluey white smoke.
As in its not thick blue, just kinda bluey tinge
Its not as bad as when ive fooked engines properly before put it that way.

Turbo has done approx. 7000miles.

Head was rebuilt with new valve stem seals 4000 ago so unlikely to be them? I hope

Anyone know of anyone good to rebuild turbo seals in East London area?

Yep in that case perhaps the turbo then.

Bummer!

I dont know how handy you are with the spanners but I would prefer the rings TBH providing you are not talking an overbore and new pistons its not that hard to whip the rods out hone the bore and pop some new rings in. A good weekend at at and around Ł100 and your in!

Fuzzys point is very valid though but I have never had a turbo start to smoke (that certainly not to say it doesnt happen) mine have all just exited stage left via the exhaust!

Wont a little oil in the boost pipes show turbo if I have a look tomorrow?

Will it just get worse?

it may be turbo, check the hoses for oil....but the turbo may exit the oil straight into the exhaust..and you cant see that easily
