Are you VAT registered? Do you have a VAT number that was issued to you by Customs & Excise?

You can not claim the VAT back if you are not registered.

Well, if you are buying the van off someone that is VAT registered then you have to pay the VAT and you would get an invoice with the VAT shown, you wont be able to claim that amount back unless you are registered with a VAT number.

You could try looking at vans for sale from non VAT registered sellers (small business's that are under the VAT threshold).

Well you can try but it's a well know scam that I am sure they are wise to:

When you put in your first VAT return (you have to send Customs & Excise the signed decleration every 3 months) this states you finantial inputs / outpots for the period), they will see it for what it is because you will not be sending any invoices for the VAT you've charged your customers in the course of your "business" in that period......or in the next quarter year period. Remember VAT inspectors have more powers than the Police when it come to seixing goods/assets from you.

The trouble 9is that you need to be a bonafide business.

The VAT inspector, as stated, isn't stupid and he will go through your books and records witha fine toothcombe and pick up on anything that is even slightly dodgy.

If you have a legimate business reason for buying the van and it will only be used for business purposes then it MAY be worthwhile registering for VAT. BUT remember then that you have to charge VAT on everything that you sell. this puts the price of yopur goods or services up by aprox 1/5 straight away ie a 100 job is now 117.50 to the customer.

Drop me a PT if you want any more information from a legitimate accountant/auditor.

64k is the limit at which you HAVE to go VAT registered. You can become VAT registered with a lot lower turnover if you wanted to.
