I'm not as young as i used to be and all this trendy stuff is beyond me so i want to amze him with my knowledge.

His been looking at numark dd but don't know what model, also he needs a mixer and all the other crap.

Now i know some of you young hip and trend folk know alot about this sort of stuff so please help

Also could someone explain the functions of the mixers, i.e. I guess he needs a 3 channel mixer, 1 channel per deck and 1 for the stereo? if so whats the point of a 2 channel mixer also the lines what model?

His got about £250 so no technic 1210's i guess

Doesnt need a 3 channel, the channels refer to the number of inputs your using and thenwill have an output to go to stereo/amp

Really he needs to get direct drive, as they are so much better than belt drive

The output connects to the stereo, not another channel

The cheap stuff is all much of a muchness tbh, shame he´s not got a bit more cash because no other deck comes close to a set of 1210s

I´d keep saving until I could afford 2nd hand 1210s

That would be a good bet, to get second hand 1210's or 1200's, its worth the money, I couldnt live without mine and could never go to another deck.

Ebay may be a good idea or the free ads like trade it.

Has he mixed before? It takes a while to get the hang of and he will need to practise loads to make it worth while.

Plus he will need cash for records

As above, get some 1210's. Bought mine for £500 kept them for 5 years and sold them for £500! they just dont seem to drop in value. (wish i could say the same for me cars.......)

Numark are fine a starter decks as are Kam, Gemini etc

The difference between Technics and ANY other brand inc supposedly top quality makes like vestax is huge!

He´ll buy cheap decks and in 6 months will have to save for 1210s, loosing money on the cheap decks in the process where as a 2nd hand set of 1210s will always be worth what he pays for them!!

the cheap direct drive deck and mixer deals (from numark) are actually okay to start up / as a christmas pressie. There's a good deal at the mo using TT1625 decks and a DM950 mixer, plus all the other stuff you need (carts, headphones and leads etc.) for £265. Nice sturdy decks and a good uncomplicated two channel mixer (has rotary bass control so you can experiment a bit)... will definitely be good enough to learn on and should easily last a couple of years.

it's a good one mate (personally wouldn't go for secondhand 1210s etc. esp if he's just starting out... if he gets into it he can save up for a pair of new decks... 1200s and 10s aren't the only choice nowadays anyway!).
He'll only need a two channel mixer to start with... 3 channels + are used for CD decks etc. as well. you just hook the decks up to the mixer, then plug the mixer into the amps aux or tape lines.
if you're on a budget you want the least gimmicky stuff out there, it's all about finding the best made most reliable stuff for the money - and for just over £250 that deals a good bet!

They are the best just depends which mk you go for, the new decks that have come out with more torque etc, have not been proven to last in a club enviroment and probably wont have any real impact on the club market.

sorry ... having played with a few different decks i can proudly say technics still feel the best ... i would deff save for some good quality ones .. rather than jumping straight in ... good thing about the approach of xmas is people need money .. soo keep your ears open as you never know a set of technics may appear cheaply .. also worth keeping an eye on the local freeadd paper or e-bay .. would never sell mine tho...

Sorry dude, but the new Numarks and Stantons feel just as good as my Technics... in fact my mates Numarks feel NICER (but he IS on lovely Ortofon Concordes and I'm on heavy old Stantons!). Anyway, GOOD secondhand Technics still fetch £450+ for the pair... which means this lad will probably have to compromise on his mixer - or spend at least three times his budget on Technics and a good quality mixer - and then if he doesn't get into it / like it then what a waste of money.
Like I say, the deal I mentioned is MORE than good enough for him to cut his teeth on for a couple of years and when he goes to sell it all (whether he wants to continue (and buy better stuff) or gives it up, he'll not have lost out too much financially (prob be able to sell it all for £150 if he keeps it in good nick). Plus this way, there's no more HIDDEN costs such as carts, or replacing faders on a secondhand mixer etc.

hi, im rik's brother, i do want decks but only got roughly 250,
my mates selling his for 250 - numark 1650's
- numark dm3000ex mixer
- 70 vinyls
but the needles are different, crossfaders slighly worn and there one sctracth on the side of the deck, ive gone off of buying these and now looking at
technics the only reason is cos there the best and they get better the older they get, though there price goes down, something bout the magnet losens letting them work better, but they are far out of my wage from workin at homebase, lol, so now its out of...

If u are serious about it save your money and get some 1210's or SIMILAR.
If you get the cheaper options you will regret it big time once you start to get good at mixing

I bought some Numarks about 2 years ago i am into garage music but cant do it for shit they have been sitting there for ages it gets expensive keeping up with new tracks. You need to pracise lots and start with easier tunes. Ithought it would be easier wish i could have some lessons but dont know anyone who can teach us? Anyone on here?

I have been DJ'in for many years now. I started in this sorta way (through messing on a mates decks) and it went from there. I started with a set of Soundlab DLP1600 (shit belt drives) and although I got used to them after a few months and was mixing (poorly) whenever I went on a pair of DD's i found it hard and totally different to belts. What you need to do is really think about how much time you are really going to devote to it and how far you want to take it? OK, so your budget is pretty small, I say only save for a pair of 12's if u really want to stick at it, I loved it from the off so had my belts for a good two years before I saved and saved for my 12's. I wouldn't change them, although they have their competition they are the industry standard imo. I see many people go the full hog and spend shed loads on 12's and a good mixer and quit after 2 weeks as they cant mix. It takes time and it is very hard at first, think about all the above before you make a choice.
