Default Getting V5 for a car when you dont have any docs

How? I presume there a form you get from the Post Office or summat?

When you apply for it tho, do they write to the current registered keeper and ask before they do anything? As if so, im fucked.

Basically ive owned a car for ages and never actually had the V5. I wanna flog it soon so need to get one.
Guy I bought it off keeps promising to send it me but never does, and he doesnt live where the car will be registered, and rarely in the UK anyhow, so if they write to the registered keepers addy fuck all will happen really, hence being fucked if they do that.

So whats the process? And how long it take?

Contact DVLA mate - i believe that they will attempt to contact the registered keeper and if there's no response after a certain timeframe then its defaulted into yours.

I had something similar when i bought an RS Turbo a few years ago - i had to evidence 'proof of purchase' - fortunately i'd still got the little green slip and a handwritten receipt.

Left it all to the DVLA and about 6 weeks later got a V5 in my name (and 4 more previous owners on the fucking logbook - scamming bastard.)

I have done it a while ago....

Basically they write to the original owner saying that someone else has applied for the V5 if he/she doesn't respond they automatically send you a V5 with your details on it.

just fill in the relevant form from the post office with all the car details, send it off to dvla with the apropriate amount of shillings and you should have it within 4 to 6 weeks. hope thet helps.

deffinatly that straightforward? my g/f's ex left his car outside her house for a year with no tax, cars recieved several fixxed penaltys. shes had the car taken away and head gasket or something done and now wants it back on the road, it's registered at her address but in his name.

i said apply for a new log book, they'll contact him at her address, which will obviously go un-answered, then they will send her the log book.?

am i right? have i missed something? will she be liable for the outstanding fixxed penaltys? she don't know where he is now either?
