I always carry the number plate in the car, with sticky pads on the back of it that have lost their sticky-ness and just say it fell off in the heat / car wash / bird hit it, and that I just haven't had a chance to put it back on yet. The only prob would be to get stopped by the same copper twice, but as I don't normally use the car for anything other than long journies / track days. The police are normally travelling in opposite direction and so I have only been stopped once whilst waiting outside a shop to pick up Jen, as the car was clean, I used the second excuse and he just told me to get it put on again ASAP.
I believe the maximum panulty is a fine (which used to be £25 when the speeding ones were only £44, so I'm sure it must have gone up), but no points come with it, so I know which is preferable
