Pretty bullet proof engine wise mate,so just check the usual bushes, shocks etc

Droplinks can rattle but aren't to expensive or difficult to change. Not really sure on a lot else mate, i've had 2 but not had too many problems.

Clutch change is a bastard though, and on my old one the rear beam bushes were fucked so may be worth looking out for as i'd imagine they will be a pain in the arse.

Oh and make sure the heaters work properly, the last thing you want to be doing is changing the heater matrix

Not a lot of help really

Excellent thanks for the replies so far! The clutch is sounding like the big issue at the minute, will be one of the primary points of inspection!!

Since you're only over the hill in Wakefield, if you need a hand when you do the clutch on one, I'll give you advice for coffee

Worn bushes in the rear axle is one thing to check for sure, will sound like an exhaust rattle when going over bumps or potholes !! Have a good look at the car from the back and check the angle of the rear wheels, if they are sloping in at the top its a sure sign of wear, another way to check is to poke your hand over the top of the wheel towards the inner arch and check the clearance between the tyre and arch, will sometimes see evidence of the tyre scrubbing the plastic inner arch liner if really worn !!!!!

Great little cars other than that but as mentioned above the heater matrix is an absolute bastard to do as complete dash has to come out !!!

Wouldn't be too concerned if the head gasket has been changed as long as it runs at a decent temperature and the fans cut in when they should.

Every time I have seen the head gasket need doing on a pug diesel engine its because the head warps. Some buggers just do the head gasket and sell them on.

Even if you take the trouble/expense to skim the head and do it all properly (from my experience on three different engines) the head warps again a few thousand miles later and your back to square one. The only proper way to do is to put the head in the bin and put a decent secondhand head on or better still a brand new one!

we used to have a 306 2litre HDi and it was the cheapest, most reliable car I have ever driven. Can't say what to look out for as ours had no problems in 30k+

Well went to view it this afternoon, after the 2 hour 30 mins to get there it was looking good, very clean motor, in Black which was a nice bonus!

However the guy selling it instantly came across a bit dodgy and after driving it, established infact that the clutch was wanked (although he told me all diesels are like that! LOL). Also had a bald front tyre which has worn heavily on one side so id guess something was a miss at the front!

It was a clean shell but thats about it really, i know for Ł995 its not gonna be a new car but i think theres better out there! Id rather wait, even if it means spending a bit more!

As you are in NORWICH, why not pop down to the local cheapie auction tuesday night around 18:00, where the local rsoc boys are meeting to have a gander at the cars.
The site is near the Police HQ at Wymondham, on the industrial estate.
