We're looking at going to vBulletin because it is what we use on a lot of our other sites, and we know it really well. It has a lot more features than phpBB. There are two security benefits as well: It is easier to keep up with patches (since we are already get these notifications for vBulletin) and the software itself tends to be easier to patch. Sometimes just a matter of uploading a single .xml file.

It is also a lot easier to add modifications, since they use a plugin system (vs. phpBB which involves manually editing files.) Installing vB may also reduce the load on the database server, depending on how many modifications we install. The moderation tools are more advanced, so the web team will have more capabilities. Tracking down users who have multiple accounts is easier, for one thing.

The one big issue I see is the PF Garage. There is no product for vBulletin which is as good as the one for phpBB. We have a fulltime developer who will eventually write a Garage for vBulletin, but he's tied up with other projects at the moment and can't get to it right away. However, we may need to go from phpBB to vBulletin in the near term if we think the hacker is getting in through some backdoor in the forum software itself. If this happens, the Garage will be on hiatus until our developer gets a chance to write the software & import all the data that's there now.

I'm suprised it hasnt happened sooner, just a FYI if you dont know, a while ago Internet Brands bought out Jelsoft Enterprises Limited, Makers of vBulletin

Oh, and I noticed how you didnt use that as a reason in your eariler post?

vBulletin is a dirty word Invision Power Board (IP.Board) is king of Forum Software

Only just seen this :S

Yeh chip we were and then it shortly did....

Vbulletin is one of the hardest forums to so call hack (in my experience).

But theres ways round that too.

The best way to secure a forum is to have a seperate login for mod cp or admin cp, ie you need to type in a password from memory in order to access it.

No point in saving it on your pc or its useless.

That rules out cookie stealing or forging.

Personally i hate IPB, it seems to be designed for a child to use.

PhpBB2 is a mare, 3 is much better but like you said not as easy to admin if your a n00b.

The only advantage i can see of IB ownership is if they are multi billionares, your never going to get PF stuck on a slow server.

UK servers = 2x+ the cost of a USA server, the fact they want to move it to uk bandwidth speaks tons about the fact they care.
