Default Fancy HT leads/spark plugs

What's the crack on these then?

I'm sure there have been other threads on this but is it worth spending my £40/£50 for a set when there will be hardly any improvement?

Does anyone run HT leads e.g. magnecore, splitfire etc etc?

Also do people have the same views on fancy spark plugs as well? I just ordered a set of motorcraft ones from ford since was advised that they are one of the best around.

Cheers people

For what car? if you are going for big horses eg on a cossie then its wise to upgrade the ignition system to minimise mis-fires etc

does you car missfire?

if the answer is no, then your ignition system do not need upgrading

Good quality leads = WELL WORTH HAVING ON A BIG POWER CAR
"Fancy" leads or "splitfire technology" = NEARLY ALWAYS ABSOLUTE BOLLOCKS

So in my opinon if you are buying leads get good ones, like magnecore.

The Ford leads are very good and designed for the wasted spark system used on the Focus. Dont waste your cash, there is no such thing as performance leads

If it is a standard car, you will see some improvement from decent leads such as magnecor, but mainly in smoothness.
"There is no such thing as performance leads", must be why every F1 team goes to Halfords then!!
Performance leads can be a con, some are, the more load a lead has the more likely it is to leak and interfere with ECU signals coming from CPs,tps etc etc, but I wouldn't go mad on std car, fords will be fine but NOT the best.
I fitted Magnecor to a std mondeo and they defo improved running, until I fitted BOSCH plugs, then two were arcing like a light show, so 200miles taer they went in the bin.

There are bosch leads around but I was primarily looking at the magnecor leads. I'm just asking should I keep the £50 in my pocket or shell it out on leads. I don't need any anyway, mine are fine but as an upgrade, would you say do it?

Tabetha, what a complete load of utter BOL*OCKS this is:

"If it is a standard car, you will see some improvement from decent leads such as magnecor, but mainly in smoothness. "

Without wishing to completely take the p!ss please explain WHY leads such as magnecor with both improve and make the engine smoother?

Yes you're quite right Gareth, goes like this..................................

I changed my 150,000 mile old leads for a new set of magnecor and the car ran much better, thus magnecors are far better than std leads!!

Anyone notice the obvious problem with the above statement?

Leads either work or they dont. Do the F1 teams claim they are performance leads? No they are just built for the job, they do not increase bhp, smoothiness etc.

I changed my 150,000 mile old leads for a new set of magnecor and the car ran much better, thus magnecors are far better than std leads!!
That is the standard situation when people claim their new leads improved performance

well I only asked because I am going to do a full service on the car and as I am replacing sparks and adding a throttle body to the car it got me thinking that maybe I could benefit from a set of magnecor leads or uprated spark leads but I've heard before that "performance" leads like magnecor, splitfire, lumenition etc etc don't really make any difference to performance of the car but sicne I am not the most technically minded I thought I'd ask other people's opinions who I'm sure know far better than I do and as I predicted the general consensus is along the lines of:

save your money, its not worth it and as always

if it aint broke dont fix it.

mate wait till your car hits 40k then buy a new coil pack due to missfire on number 3

dont bother changing plugs/leads ect then

its the coil pack like normal

Dont bother, it will not do anything positive. You will probably lose power at the top end and use more petrol. If it was that easy to get more power Ford would have done it!!!

And besides, for a 200 bhp engine you would only use 40mm ITBs.

at 18, its very hard to get anything with any sort of grunt. the only thing I could have got that was insurable was a fabia vRS which could've had a bit more poke gotten out of it but at the moment i'm doing the best I can. that just came up cheap so I thought I'll try it out. At worst can always go on ebay.

and the turbo is coming in a few years time money permitting

As Karl says what tabetha should have said is that NEW leads (of standard or better quality) will often result in the car driving better.

nice car for a 18 year old

what about playing about with the suspension, would make your car alot of fun to drive (even though i love the way focus drive ) with the right mods, you could keep up with some very nice cars

power isnt everything (ya it is,, i just want you to feel better )

Gareth T

Car is already lowered on GAZ shocks all round and polybushed.

Within next few months definitely will need tyres and won't be skimping on those.

And also on the cards is cams, verniers and a live map

I love the focus a lot and don't see myself changing it until I'm at least in my early to mid 20s. There just isn't anything out there I could justify buying that would make me as happy as it has. And if I was to stick with Ford realistically the only thing that would make me happy is a focus ST or a focus RS.

I know I could probably get an FRST in a few years time but I think after having a focus I don't think I could do it even though I've loved them since about when I was 14.

I'm going to enjoy this car though as much as I can definitely

save the money and buy the ST or RS mate!
we all go down your route when we are younger,, and genrally our cars turn into money bins

resale valve will always be better on the frs then your car if you do it up to a frs

Cams, verniers, live map etc will do very little, if anything. They will also put your insurance through the roof making an ST cheaper.

The ZETEC is a crackign engine, but tuning it in the original car is a pain in the ass.

hmm.

Well there's options such as turbo mine, 2.0 zetec turbo, ST170 engine conversion, ST170 engine + turbo or an RS engine.

All going to seriously bankrupt me so will be happy if I can squeeze 150-160 out of it as it is
