i've got a e36 323i and done loads of re-search.

the Nikasil issue is the biggest problem - luckily mine had a new block, crank & pistons fitted after 18,000 miles!

if you phone/ email BMW with the registration number or VIN number they can tell you if the Nikasil issue has been attended too

Tel: 0800 325600
Fax: 0870 5050 206
Email: customer.information@bmw.co.uk

i'll see if i've still got the old stuff on the Nikasil somewhere

You can - just below the starter motor there is a little lug on the block, if the lug has a small metal plate bolted to it then it is a new Alusil block - takes about 30 seconds to check

also watch for tires worn on the inside which would suggest ball joint problems (quite expensive to replace) and listen for knock from the suspension on the test drive & make sure all electrics work

Was gonna get one of these myself but then decided I wanted more power and threw sense out the window in typical Jay style

If the rear suspension knocks over bumps, it's likely to be a bush, which won't cost the eath to replace.

She wont have the E30 Sport like i had before chink, so going to look at one tomos if you fancy it, not too far away..

I wanted the M3 but seems a bit daft for her to be honest she wouldnt use it like me..so 328i sports look good and cheap too. She wanted an FTO but got daft insurance qoutes, 4k!!! serious and i'm 30 ffs, cheapest i got was Ł1900.
Me and her on 328i Ł538 Fully comp.

Will check on them bushes ect, but you say its nowt major??

|Rear trailing arm bushes, can take a bit of time, a lot easier if you use powerflex bushes.
No big deal.

Yep, was a nice motor, chucked some coilovers on it and it was a bit of a wepaon in the corners - ten times better than my old cossie was

Also don't be scared about front ball joint changes - they are piss easy to do with the right rool

front wishbones tend to be needed bit are only 40 quid each side

rear trailing arm bushes also ALWAYS go,,,,, also top suspention mounts go too

apart from that and the block issues theres fuck all TBH

ive only got a 325 but ive done the wishbones and rear bushes, steering rack, wheel bearings and lambda sensor and tbh non of em was big money

they nice to drive too and mines broken down twice in almost 2 years, once was a battery and the other was a waterpump

the other parts i changed as they was worn out,,,,,, due to the reliability and the fact is sits at 130mph without taking a week to get there is the reason why i aint bothered buying a new car

they are great cars for what they cost now, the nikasil problem is a bit exaggerated on the forums, if its going to be an issue it will have shown up by now (ie look out for smokey/bore wear) i its not using oil then it's probably fine (you could also do a compression test to be sure).

I've had a few and reckon they are nicer to drive than my current E36 M3 EVO, the 328 is almost as quick in most day to day driving and has better steering / gearchange than the M3 3.2, (obviously not as quick on the open road as much less power). And a 328 sport will average mid 30 mpg at fairly high speed (an M3 never gets better than early 20's!)

Not much to look out for on them, airbag warning lights come on regularly, front elec windows get suffer from auto-closing when old, odometer sometimes lose a line due to poor connection when cold.

Ginge - breaking down twice in 2 years is reliable to you?
Suppose if you've had a cossie....

My M3 hasn't let me down in over 2 years, but is only just run in at 133k miles

Any update on this?

for a car that gets abused and never looked after YES very reliable

waterpump went after we drove to blackpool and dancossie held the car at 145 on the clocks for bout 12 mins and we was nailing it there and back ( after we dropped clare off )

anyone will tell you how i look after a car,,,,,,, the car does 12mpg,,,,, best ive seen ot 17mpg when im low in fuel

its been through 2 sets of rear tyres already, been to germany where the only prep work i done was get a tech to look over the car so see whats wrong with it

when your M3 gets to 160k miles give me a list of the parts you have purchased in 2 years

oh and battery went dead due to me using the car every other week for a quick drive as i never used the car for work

first car ive ever got a legal MOT for too

have to disagree on the fuel economy mate. round town late teens/early 20's yes. but i have just done a 1000 mile trip to france and back and averaged 30mpg in my m3 evo.

then your driving is far from dangerous IMO

maybe contact a mod and see if your name could be changed to

" cautious with some possible off moments should the mood take you Brian"

with a name like dangerous brian i would be ashamed to get double digits for fuel economy

I found the steering arm-twirlingly slow compared to most sporty cars I've had like the Cosworth and Primera GT. Not as bad as the E30 325i Sport though.

Anyway, if it bothers you get a Z3 rack or an E46 rack off a later 'Sport pack' car ( 02-> on ) - will swap easily and usefully quicker - takes a half turn of lock out the equation

GRACELAND FYI I called you as i trusted you to tell me what the garage was like, you said it was fine, i went to look at the bm, thought it best i look at another before jumping in feet first, I got home posted up that Id bought the 2nd one, to which you replied "I've been and bought the other one you looked at with some emmbarrased faces" you must of moved quick i only looked at it the day before, and i think you will find thats the first time i found out you had bought it - See below thread, Im not bothered about you buying the car I got a better deal in the long run, just expected more from a "mate" a call to double check i didnt want it wouldnt of gone a miss

https://passionford.com/forum/viewto...asc&highlight=

Anyways i think i have hijacked enough of this post, the rest can be discussed via PM if you prefer, but i dont get on here much anymore so not sure when ill get to read anything.

MrBroadside - Shes my baby I prefer her so much to the cossies, albeit apart from the power LOL, looks a little different now though LOL...
