I wouldnt Lee, The CPU's get real hot real quick. Just pop to a PC world component store and treat your self to an ultra quiet fan.
£20-£30 pounds for piece and quiet.

nah; you'll fry it mate - cost you more in the long run if you did - maplins or somewhere like that do quiet(er) fans for less than 50 of your finest english pounds

Either buy one, or open the case up and remove the shit around the existing one.

It will be caked in crap. Dust, Fluff etc.

Ask yourself - why is it on? Might it be that the PC is hot and needs the cooling airflow? So then ask yourself, should I turn off that cooling airflow?

Tell you want to do so stop it annoying you and not cost you any money - CLEAN YOUR PC As Adrian said, inside will be full of fluff and dust, give it a nice clean out (not with a hoover ) and it'll be a lot better....

Lee

After probably less than 5 mins use from being stone cold, your PC would crash/reset etc.

Trouble with fans, the bearings go after a while, which is the nasty noise you hear.

If its an old type processor, the fans are only about a fiver, pop to a local comp shop and get it swapped

Fan in the back of the PC,

it will take a good while before it crashes if it's still a PIII
Depends what hard disk is in there etc.

PIV needs both CPU fan and case fan.

Just get a quieter fan, I have an antec 900 case running about 8 fans with the biggest being over 200mm. I run loads of games which puts quite a bit of load on the computer etc and its still virtually silent. I wouldnt run a computer without a cpu fan as its suicide for it

if its just a case fan then it'll be ok to remove it, the computer may run a little hotter but unless your running intensive programs or playing games you wont notice.

worst case if it gets to hot the computer will just restart or shut itself down, no harm done.
but i seriously doubt that your case fan makes any difference at all to internal temps as the cases themselves tend to be so poorly designed for airflow.
