Default Any WiFi experts in here???

Right.... as you may remember i bought a laptop a while ago made by ACER.

Now, last night i got to set it all up, and install my wireless router stuff... all went ok, until i went to connect to the net...

The bloody laptop picks up every other buggers wifi signal aprt from mine!

It can pick up both neighbours bloody wifi, sods law....

So.... i set it all up on my desk top and the friggin thing works fine on that, but it just wont behave on my laptop... do ya think it could be to do with Vista??

Ive check all my wlan setting, and my internet cable strength and all is ok....

either that or ive bought a duff laptop!

Junk the Acer network managment....

I too have an acer laptop (with vista), and it came with bundled software to setup all the wi-fi conections with. and I had nothing but trouble with it.... networks dissapearing, connection drops etc..

and just use the wireless network settings in windows vista. Hope this helps!!

I had the same on my Daughters new computer

Try disabling and then re-enable or repair the network connection (wireless)

worked on mine

if you double click the wireless icon you can go to advanced settings and change the preference settings to pick up your WIFI only/ first.

Default hi

the encrypted wifis are easy to crack

you need change the settings of your conexion and change the settings of the router to put the encrypt settings on, if you dont turn on the security some of your neighbours can take from you the conexion

if you dont know how you can change this , send me a pm and i explain all stages that you need to change this and fit your wifi with a little security !!

Best Regards

ensure that the wireless on the router is turned on as you can disable it on the router

xurrita - Thanks ever so much for your help, but its not my security that is the issue...ive got all of thatset up.....the main problem is that my laptop wont pick up my own wireless router, even thought the line and connection is fine.

You haven't put in mac-address security in an earlier stage for another PC ? As you will have to add your laptop's mac address to it too.

Also if you are hiding your SSID the laptop won't find it.

Turn the SSID broadcast on on the router then do some testing. Afterwards when you have saved the wireless profile on your laptop you can turn the broadcast back off.

Also, you DO have a wireless router and not just a wireless access point i might hope ?

Joris_FRST - First of all i installed the wireless router to my desktop pc, and it works fine on that. I then went to install it on my laptop, but the laptop doesnt recognise the router for some reason. I dont recall having to add any address in at the install stage.

SSID? What is this?

And yes, it definitely IS a router and not just an access point.

SSID is the wireless network name.

if you login to the router from your desktop pc and go through the settings you should be able to see if it's being broadcasted or not.

(if you installed it all on the desktop with a cd for your router you probably had to check some security options, this being one of them.)

If you can't go in the router setup via the router home page or don't trust it, just try the following.

In the Wireless software of Acer, create a new profile, their put in the network name (SSID) (you can find this on your desktop pc i guess)
Then check the right securities and keys, then save the profile, and force a connect.

Cool, thankyou ill give that a go!! when i called the router helpline, they took me through a process to change the name of the router and the channel???

should i change the channel back to what is was, as we briefly picked up the internet connection on that, but only for a few seconds before it disconnected.... mind you, im not sure of that was jumping on someone elses connection or not

Channel doesn't matter, as long as it's 1, 6 or 11 all other channels are intermediate channels.

the name of the router will probably have not been the name of the router but the SSID So if you still know that that's the thing you have to put into the acer wireless profile stuff. (to put it technically)

don't worry, doesn't matter for setting up right now, it won't be your problem at the moment.

Just when you have alot of neighbours with wifi, channel 9 will proove to be a stupid idea Just change it when you get everything working first.
