Default Bosch KE-Jetronic question

I was always under the impression that the breather system could not be vented to atmosphere as the system needed to be sealed to operate correctly hence why removing the oil cap or rubbing a hole in the pipe from the filter to metering head caused the car to either not run or run like a sack of spanners.

I've been told this isn't the case if so info would be handy as I was thinking about adding a catch tank.

Yo matey - I am having to think a bit far back for this one...

Okay - the metering head has a take off/input near the standard boost pipe (metering head to turbo) that feeds from the breather system. This is the return so that all breathed gasses end up back in the engine.

The reason that the car stalls when the filler cap is off, is that air is sucked from the oil filler through the pipe in the metering head BELOW the flap in the metering head. So the conclusion is that un-metered air enters the engine and it runs lean/stalls.

If you block off the pipe that enters the metering head and instead vent to a catch tank then you will be fine. I had no issues whatsoever and my car burned no oil - however AVA always said I should have left it how ford built it lol.

I think that answers ur question as I read it quickly.

Cheers

RW

the theory is spot on but on mine it just would not run unless the breather was connected to the metering head pipe that RW mentions. I wanted to run it venting to atmos and blocked the pipe on the metering head but it wouldnt have any of it. That was a spec-r breather, got a bailey one to plumb in now but doubt it will make any difference

The reason it sometimes won't run, is that when you block of the metering inlet, the engine is no longer using the air in the crankcase, and so runs rich. A small turn of the idle CO screw will sort this.

You cant JUST block it off, thats why, you need to adjust the idle bypass and fuel mixture as well.
