I always reckoned the M3 E36 was one of the best budget car choices for the ring. Preferably a non-evo to avoid issues relating to VANOS

yeah, the car was great but i just dont want another cossie and go down that road if you with me
i agree about the M3 but theres alot of tired ones out there but its prefect for me
i currently got a 325i thats fitting the bill and done "ok" at the ring, needed better brakes/bushes and suspention aswell as more power and i higher diff as i found i was always changing gear rather than being able to keep in gear longer like jim was in hes motor
you never know though i may get a M3 as it suits what i need,,, just finding a good one for normal money

Thanks for the kind words, EscoRacer - I am very excited!
Chip - IIRC you poo pooed the Cossie for part of the trip into a nice comfy Mercedes!
Ginge - I can recommend the M5 for a ring weapon - makes you look like a hero as very very very easy to drive! Take out a loan - you know it makes sense!

Hi all
Chip - you mean this bit
I have now!!! ROFOL
Ref petrol, I see this as a green move, as it may very well have an improved economy over the M5!!!!

10K+ Poster!!
A proper S has 450 bhp instead of 420.
I was reading a 996 TT buying guide today in on of the porker mags and it says they can be had for under 40 k nowadays.
Not that much money if you think how much half of us have blown on cossies over the years.

Just been reading the all the posts...
Lovely looking car!!! I just love the motor, love colour - just love it.
I have to admit until three years ago when i first went to the ring i didnt really now what all the fuss was. I just thought it was a noisy beetle with the engine in the wrong place.
Since that time i have been passed by every configuration of Porsche 911 on the ring and i have finally got it... they are not owneed by brace wearing yuppies from the eighties. they are proper cars that just annihlate everything around that track....
The only car in the ring car park that i ever want to go round in is a porker... so i have gone from completely apathethic to a a porscheaphile.... Thanks JJ, i owe you for that.
Ps, please can i bags the spectator seat around the ring in apr/may when we go again.... pretty please.

Hi Silver
Seat reserved for a spectator lap! You all up for tomorrow night?
Hi Euan,
I read that article as well! Having done my homework, I wouldnt buy any Porsche Turbo for less than 40k unless you are only intending to keep it for a year at the most. The cheap ones are older and higher mileage, and I reckon there is an increased possibility of a big bill!
My biggest priority by a country mile was that it come with an OPC! That way big bills will be Porsches problem and not mine. I found that the cheaper ones didnt have it.
I needed to be sure that I would be able to keep the girl in warranty for as long as I was to keep the car (so wanted to be able to keep in warranty for 4 years).
I thought that the point about the S having increased power for a shorter torque band is often overlooked. did you know that the 450bhp actually has a slower 0-100 time than the 420one? Go figure!!!
I think that the X50 (or S) is better in gear mind. I have come to think of it as a kinda esco big turbo small turbo thing.
Getting a straight answer on the actual components that are improved on the X50 is no easy task!
The popular belief is that the X50 has bigger turbos, though speaking to a friend of mine in Porsche, the porsche parts system doesnt seem to list a separate part number for the turbos to each type! (only different ones are for the GT2). Not definitive, just requires further investigation.
What I do know is that they have a different exhaust, intercoolers, oil pump, and clutch.
The plot thickens!
