Default Engine honing/re bore

Just want to better understand engines and just need something clearing up.......

what is honing? would honing be used in an engine rebuild and will oversized pistons need to be used afterwards.

what is re-boreing? is this done when you want capacity increased or is used when repairing cylinders??

if im on wrong track completely just give us a slap

re-boring is when you actually enlarge the bores in order to fit a larger size of piston.

honing is when you roughen up the surfacae so that you can bed in new rings and get a good seal.

honing will take a couple of thou of metal out though, so bear in mind that ALSO makes the bores bigger

when an engine is being rebuild the cylinders get honed dont they? so new pistons would need to be bought? or would it only need bigger rings?

just rings as long as youve properly inspected them then gap the rings before fitment

Just rings typically, BUT bear in mind your pistons WILL be loose in the bore, and hence wont do as many miles this time around.

Ideally you would fit oversized pistons to a freshly bored block, to acheive piston to bore clearances that are as tight as they were when the engine was new....that way you will give the engine plenty of life. (provided the block isn't weakened by the rebore too much).

sometimes when you take an engine apart there isn't much wear and you can just deglaze and fit new rings and that alone will freshen it up a touch.
