Some very good info here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbocharger#History
The first production turbocharged automobile engines came from General Motors in 1962. The A-body Oldsmobile Cutlass Jetfire and Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder were both fitted with turbochargers. The Oldsmobile is often recognized as the first, since it came out a few months earlier than the Corvair.
BMW led the resurgence of the automobile turbo with the 1973 2002 Turbo, with Porsche following with the 911 Turbo, introduced at the 1974 Paris Motor Show. Buick was the first GM division to bring back the turbo, in the 1978 Buick Regal, followed by the Mercedes-Benz 300D, Saab 99 in 1978. Japanese manufacturers followed suit, with Mitsubishi Lancer in 1978, Toyota Supra in 1980, Nissan 280ZX in 1981 and Mazda RX-7 in 1984.

They may be the recognised ones but Rudolf Diesel introduced the first supercharger in 1896, the first patent going to BUCHI in 1905.
In 1902 RENAULT introduced it onto and engine later that year fitted to a car.
Probably the first recongnised car was that of LEE CHADWICK, of the USA when his car so equipped was entered into the great DESPAIR HILL CLIMB, on 30th MAY 1908.

The first turbocharger applications were limited to very large engines, e.g. marine engines. In the automotive engine industry, turbocharging started with truck engines. In 1938, the first turbocharged engine for trucks was built by the "Swiss Machine Works Saurer".
The Chevrolet Corvair Monza and the Oldsmobile Jetfire were the first turbo-powered passenger cars, and made their debut on the US market in 1962/63. Despite maximum technical outlay, however, their poor reliability caused them to disappear quickly from the market.

PMSL@ Saab and BMW ![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
Right, here we go, by time ive typed all this it will prob be tomorro![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
Turbo versions of the Chevy Corsair and Oldsmobile Jetfire (the Olds actually packing what became the Rover V8) were the first ever production turbo CARS, coming out within months of each other in 1962.
The first ever TURBO was fitted to an engine in 1909, a diesel engine, and it was just an expererment of course, this was the first ever turbo.
They tried turbos on petrol engines shortly after, mostly due to WW1, but the metals wasnt good enough for the higher EGTs, so it didnt work, and planes stuck with superchargers for then.
By 1920 tho better turbos were around, and a turbo plane took the world altitude record.
By WW2 some aeroplanes on both sides were turbocharged.
Took a fair while after till turbos were able to be made small enough to be used on an engine remotely useable on a road vehicle tho!
In 1949 truck manufacturers finally put the first properly working and useable turbocharged vehicles on the road, big ass trucks, and by 1950 the first ever production vehicle, a big american truck was in production.
In 1952 the first turbo racing car appeared, and in the indy500, a diesel!
It got pole and led for 100miles till dirt and shit clogged the turbo and ended its race.
By the 60s fucking tons of diesels, from trucks to tractors, were turbo.
Turbo petrol race cars started to dominate in the early 70s, with 2.6litre 4cyl 16valve Indy cars pushing over 1000bhp, and Porsche 917 Can Am cars pushing well over 1100bhp.
In 1973 and 1974, Porsche and BMW brought out the first EUROPEAN turbo production cars.
And in 1977 Saab brought one out with the Saab 99 Turbo.
And the rest we say, is history.
PS, you REALLY should see the Early 70s indy car engines, they put what a lot of people consider to be essential tuning items to shit, thats for sure![Wink](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
Mild cams, REALLY unequal length log exhaust manifold, mechanical fuel injection, etc etc, they class.
PPS The famous Lee Chadwick car had a centrifugal supercharger, not a turbo.
