Default quick memory question (RAM)

Looking at a PC system (Dell) and spec is perfect other than it only has 256mb of RAM.... I wanted 512mb of RAM.... Now Dells site is rather confusing to me when I looked to see how much it would be to increase my RAM.... I was under the impression you have to add an identical RAM to increase, ie I have 256mb so add another 256 to = 512....

Dells site lists them like so;

DELL - 256MB DDR333 Dual Channel Memory (2x128) for Dimension 4600 MMT
Dell Part : 370-11355, Manufacturer Part : 370-11355
Usually Ships: 5-7 Days £77.55
£59.93
[You Save £17.63]

DELL - 512MB DDR333 Dual Channel Memory (2x256) for Dimension 4600 MMT
Dell Part : 370-11356, Manufacturer Part : 370-11356
Usually Ships: 5-7 Days £171.55
£130.43
[You Save £41.13]

So I don't get it.... Which one do I need? as the 512 is 2x 256 but I already have 1x 256

So I need help fast as I would like to buy this system, but not if it gonna cost another £130 to upgrade the RAM Cos then the price ain't worth it

£130.43
Not bought ram for mine in ages but that seems a lot of £££
I would get a PC direct from them then go to crucial and get Ram from them, should work out cheaper as long as your willing to fit it.

As for what it says I may be really wrong but I think it is still just a stick of ram not two. However it is double sided made up of 2X256mb.

Also unless Dell are using really crap motherboards you have a load of 'compatable' alternatives to what Dell sell any way.

This is what I am getting at - if I only need another 256 to make my 512, Dell list that as 2x 128's - is that ompatible with the 1x 256 in the PC at the mo?

Do I even have to use a Dell one? Can it be another make?

Need this answered 100% soon tho - running out of time

Thrush No you do not need to use Dell Ram.
as for the other 256, this is where I think its double sided made up from 1 side of 128 + another side of 128

That make sense?

I'd go elsewhere mate and get a PC to exactly the spec you want. 256MB is shonky these days. Anybody flogging a XP based machine with only 256MB wants shooting.

Most of the systems from dell come std with 256 with the option to upgrade.... It's just that this is fairly cheap as it is old new stock....

If I only need a 256 (made from 2x 128's) then thats cool as they list that for £60

Before you purchase any ram, you need to know what speeds your motherboard can handle, and how many slot's you have. To do this, you will need to take the side of the case off, or look at the motherboard manual, eaither way, you're getting shafted on the prices
