Does anyone know why, when i search the DVLA or other websites for a private registration, if i choose the letter "C" I can't then choose a number any higher than 20? For examples, "C32 XXX"??
And also, why can't i do a search for an old school plate with all letters first, eg "ERS 456Y"
Cheers

all the ones above C20 were probably registered on cars from new (except for a select few that may have spelt something and been worth a bit of moneys?)
and the old style ones, as far as i know, youve not been able to buy them from DVLA for at least 10yrs

DVLA have to keep stocks numbers of all types to re - issue as a correct format replacement plate when numbers get sold. They can't let all numbers go.
DVLA also keep back numbers for auction only.
When I registered my 1988 import 7 years ago they were just releasing previously un-released C prefix numbers, they are only now up to releasing un-released F prefix.
Your not looking in the right places for C prefix:

On the website DVLA only offer certain prefix plates:
1-20
Tens numbers (20, 30)
Same numbers (22, 222)
Hundred numbers (200, 300)
Some of these were held back for auction, along with most of the "normal" prefix numbers that spell words, like A5COT, S1NGH, or K1NGS.
Don't know why the don't offer the old plates, except that it would kill trade for the registration number traders.
