Default Change of Career

I really feel as though I'm just plodding along at the minute, I've been in my current office job for 4 years and I'm totally sick!!

I need a change of direction but haven't got a clue where to start, wouldn't mind doing some sort of highway maintenance or something like that, but tbh I just want a change!

With qualifications to just A-Level, whats the chance of doing something like the above or would I need a specific degree?

Lad from school I know does maintenance on M25 as driver/foreman, and has done for 5 or 6 years now. Good pay, but VERY dangerous as you start out putting out cones on motorway with cars running.

Have you spoken to your boss to see what you could work towards promotion wise as you must have proved yourself in 4 years? Or been to register/chat with a couple of recruitment agencies to see what they could advise on?

The danger really doesn't put me off, I think I'd love it!!

It's the civil service I work for and promotions from my grade to the next are few and far between, I've moved from one post to another but just on a level transfer which gets me nowhere.

Thing is when I look on job websites there's plenty of vacancies that I know I could fill but it's just a shame I don't have experience in a particular field or a degree

I don't have a degree either mate - dropped out of uni!

I have worked a crap sales job for last 8 months to get some experience and just scored a job in recruitment. Again, its not my ultimate aim (dunno what is really) but bonus in this looks good, and again is building CV. Will do 12-18 months here, then re assess things.

Prob worth deciding what you WANT to do, then see about how to achieve it.

hi there mate im currently doing the opposite to you and am comeing out of the highway maintinance and wanting someting different. lol

it is very easy to get in to desiareble tickets to have will be ( a cscs card very easy to get costs £25 for test at most construction corse centres) you may be able to get on with just that but if you have got a "12d" ticket you will get snatched up . just a case of ringing round local traffic management companys near you . hope this is of some help . any questions about the TM industry just ask matey .

Im sort of in the same boat as yourself. Have worked in a sports centre for the past 9 years. To start off with it was great! Got paid a good wage to wacth half naked woman swimming & if ever i got bored of that i just went & played football.

I slowly but surely worked my way up the ladder then 6 months ago there was a new wage structure put in place.

Myself & a few other people that i work with ended up loosing £8k a year each!

& like yourself am not qualified to do much else. However have just applied for a job as a sky installation engineer. Something completly different but they give you training & the pay aint to bad. & at least i wont be stuck in the same building all day.

Best way to get in to it is to sign up with a few agencies as a fitters mate....as your a lagger already you will probably be ok . I served my time as a coded welder but took interest in the fitting of the pipes aswell... now i do both.
So , work as a mate for a wee while anyone can do that really ..and then progress on to a fitter.
Some cracking jobs out there. I am on a good one at the mo..... 4x 6inch butt welds a day, job n nock home for 2pm ....friday 2x 6inch welds home for 10am ish ....£200 a day...
Was on a job in london a few year ago about 30 lads on the job , all in digs near each other ....Pished every night ... sneak off the site at lunch for a gob full also happy days .... met some top lads on my travels..
Still wana be a porn star though
