Default Track set up

Currently running coilovers and am using the standard poundage springs.

Does anyone know what kind of poundage is best suited for a FWD ford for track/race usage.

Is 350-400 front and 550-600 sounding about right

Any pointers would be appreciated

I'm running 325lb in the front and 450's in the back.

Thats on a xe nova though, and I have been told to go stiffer in the back, its not on coliovers in the back yet so I've bodged some 2 1/4 springs in where the standard springs went

Looks shit but seems to work very well

Sounds about right. 300 front, 550 rear

You want it stiff at the back to help nduce oversteer. The stiffer it is, the less progression you get from grip to slide.

For full monty track set up you should look at how much bump steer you have at the rear this also dictates how stiff it should be and your static toe setting.

Its a huge subject with very many variables. There is no such thing as a perfect set-up. You just have to work out where to take the biggest compramise.

S - that last comment sums it up

Everyone wants it perfect, but everyone wants it different too.

Then you get people that want it perfect from day 1, wheras other people have been trying to get it perfect for over 20 years lol.

You find perfection... then go to a different place/venue/road etc and your new found perfection soon becomes shit.

So you start over again

Try it, see if you like it, and if you don't - then change it... simple really

I assume how heavy the engine is will effect the springs? Or am I completely off the wrong lines?

I desperatly need mine setting up and I will do over the winter.

I noticed at silverstone I was getting some understeer after a while, maybe because of tyre pressures?

Spring rates - you do take into account the weight of the vehicle, the amount of G force the tyres can exsurt into the suspension and the suspension travel available. Also front or rear wheel drive.

At McLaren last year we had the choise of the following -
32 front spring rates
30 front anti roll bars rates
5 different front caster angles
20 ish front camber angles
infanate ride heights
The same for the rear

It was all track and weather dependant but you did find that there were favorite combanations.

Your tyre pressures should be the last thing to adjust if at all. I have not done any track work with the current track day tyres, but basiclly a road going radial is designed not to heat up (okay it might feel hot 40 deg C or so) where the best option is to leave it alone and let it work at its designed pressure 28-32psi

I see.

Tbh the front arms haven't been set up properly, BUT it did seem to understeer towards the end of the session which made me think it could be pressures.

Cheers

At least give us a clue as to what car you have, what dampers you run, how much experience you have and the condition of other items such as tyres etc
