when my engine is running, hot or cold it makes a steam train sound.

Is it actually rising and lowering in revs?

nope revs stay fine, engine is rough on idle tho, whole car sort of vibrates.

Engine/gbox mount gone causing vibrations, which then caused stress on the exhaust system somewhere and cracked it which is the reason for the tuff tuff tuff?
Not unheard of with v.worn/fecked mounts

ahhhh fuck sake, its going to be a shit job then. but surely if exhaust cracked performance will be shit cause its fucking good for a 1.6

On a 1.6 its not gonna make a HUGE difference to performance. It took me a while to realise on my old 1.6i. Its a possibility anyway. Best thing is to get the car in the air and run it, and ull feel any air escaping. Don't know what zetec exhaust systems are like but mine used to always crack at the downpipe to manifold joint as there was no flex here

so if it is cracked i just replace the down pipe, or cracked section and it will be fine ?

If it is the downpipe, I am about to scrap my black mk6 1.6 and you can have the downpipe. I am in wigan.

im in wiltshire. i havent checked what part it is as it's dark. why you scrapping it? ill have the spats or skirts if your selling them. and if you had any too.

MOT in december and i aint passing and fed up of spending money on it

the noise could be your water pump pas pump cam belt tenstions

thats a really good point mate, the one at the top, i think its the water pump, not really looked, but it does seem to wobble a bit. not going round properly, like its oval shaped.

have u got a induction kit if so u will get a tuff tuff noise with a misfire

have an induction filter, but why would that cause tuff tuff, its not misfiring im sure.
