Default Shot blasting...

Anyone know where i can get a d.i.y Shot blasting kit.

I'll be using it on my compressor and ive seen the obvious ones like sealey etc..

Just wondering if anyone has a kit themselfs or knows of a good one to go for.

It would make life so much easier with a proper bit of kit.

ive looked but for a cabnet of a decent size 2 get anything bigger than a brake disk your talking lots of cash (200-300)
The gun on its own is the cheep bit, but its if u got some were u can be spraying grit everywere! and of corse not bottered about only using the grit stuff once!

True though it would make life so much easer, no more wire wheels

make your own its easy to do

buy the gun and glass bead from machine mart then make a tall wooden box like a wardrobe, sheet of glass in the front or top, 2 holes for rubber gauntlets in the front, and a hopper type catcher inside to recirculate the bead back to the gun.

I have made a couple over the years, its a handy piece of kit, if you put thin plastic sheet in front of the glass it stops it misting over as well, just replace the plastic every so often

We have an SB30 here as in the first link that GarethT put up. It's hardly been used (just as I told Gary, but he wouldn't listen).

We'd be interested in selling it if its any use to you.

If you only have single phase [240 volts] buy the biggest compressor you can ie 3 hp decent size air tank say 200litres because any shot blaster uses a hell of a lot of air and a little cheapo sealy or machine mart special will not last to long. You can buy 4hp compressors that run on 240volts for about 5 or 6 hundred quid but you cant run them of a 13 amp plug you need a proper supply like a cooker sockets that is 30amps

I use a 3hp 240v one with a 50 litre tank - the tanks a bit small so you have to let it build back up every few minutes - its fine for hobby sand blasting but the bigger the tank the better

Size of the pump is more important than tank size, you can have a 3hp comp that gives out 12cfm or a better quality one that will give about 18cfm its all on how much you spend

You do need a very large compressor, I have a 4hp unit and 80-litre tank, and this is only just capable for the job, well for any length of time anyway

Cheers

Its probably cheaper to pay someone to do it than buy all the kit cos at the end of the day those cabinets are only small anyway

to be honest mate just buy the biggest machine you can afford but even then i bet it struggles.Buy one where the pump has cast iron barrels not aluminium as these tend to be more heavy duty

Ive got a shot blaster and i just use kiln dried sharp sand when blasting rust etc. Alot cheaper than using the proper grit. Its about 5 quid for 25 kg. Dont mind it going all over then.

Industry stopped using sand years ago for blasting as the particles of silica in it is cancer causing if breathed in, make sure you use a good mask if you use sand, But I would avoid just to save a few quid.
