Default F.A.O MSD STU or anyone else into PS3's

I read a post a while back about being able to stream video's etc from a PC onto your PS3, if you have time would you be able to explain to me how this is done. My PS3 is connected to the internet etc and I have some DVD's downloaded on my laptop that I would like to stream onto my TV via the PS3.

Cheers in advance.

Nick.

I know its not the PS3 but the Xbox 360 does the same...i have just set this up on mine, just means hardwiring it in

I had to upgrade to a different program ..ie Windows Vista.....then just connected it to the console and job done

I can now watch the hundreds of Full HD films i have on my hard drives through the Xbox and onto my TV

Don't have to be hard wired i don't think Tiff...

It just needs to be on the same network i believe.

On the PS3 options there is a menu to connect to a media server so I presume it is something to do with that. My laptop is on vista, i'd prefer to use the PS3 rather than the xbox as thats not connected to the surround sound properly.

i haven't got one yet, but i read up on it as it's something that i would want to do. you do use the media server function in the menu and it's fully covered in the instructions that are online

Do you know where I can get the online instruction manual?

Go to "Video" and select "Media Servers". This will search your network and hopefully find your PC. It will show all files, but you have to allow on your PC to share files. Type in "Share Files" on Windows Vista Help to find out how...

Both XB360 and the PS3 do not run all video and sound files. Neither do AVI and XB360 works better with Windows Media Player.

just googled 'playstation 3 manual' and came to:

http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...ent/index.html

type media server in the search and click the first link to get this

http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...nnectdlna.html

the bit that you probably need to do is

When using a MicrosoftŽ WindowsŽ personal computer as a DLNA Media Server
A MicrosoftŽ WindowsŽ personal computer can be used as a DLNA Media Server by using Windows MediaŽ Player 11 functions.

1.
Start Windows MediaŽ Player 11.

2.
Select [Media Sharing] from the [Library] menu.

3.
Check [Share media].

4.
From the list of devices under the [Share media] checkbox, select the devices that you want to share data with, and then select [Allow].

5.
Select [OK].
Setup for the DLNA Media Server is completed.
hope that helps nick

as i say, i don't have one yet so can't really help more than that.

you, or others, may be interested to know that you do not need to run a pc to store all your media on. a pc uses a lot of energy and makes noise etc. there are things called NAS (Network Attached Storage) that can do the job for you.

i have a NAS (hidden away in the cupboard under the stairs) made by QNAP that is basically a hard drive in a case with a network connection (hard wired to my router) and it also has a small cpu and memory that can run an operating system. you can then set it up to act as a Media Server for PS3 or other devices capable of streaming from a media server (i'm shortly going to get a hifi for the bedroom with built in wireless streaming capability)

this link may also help with your current problem

http://www.qnap.com/images/products/.../TS109AP08.htm

EDIT: a NAS is also a good way of keeping a backup of all your important media files rather than simply using a USB HDD or whatever
