I know what happens when an MR340 has a pop at the most reliable[ ] 2WD saph known to man. That was at 18psi on the old fucked engine 2 days before i pulled it out and 3 up.

tjis always comes up.ok so the technology is a mass difference but this is about straight line.i have an honest 350 bhp and i raced an fq340 on a long bit of private road .we were both 2 up we both went off the roundabout in 2nd and we both ran up to 150mph before letting off.
the result?

dead even all the way! not an inch in it.we were both smiling like hell over it.fair play to it,it did well.
i love evo's more so than skylines and so much more than scoobies, but i cant face buying one because they are just not me.i had my mates evo 6 for 2 weeks and it was a great car and very accomplished but just not got the character for me

I was like that Dave... but luckily I had the benefit of owning both the Escos and Evo for 12 months. I bought my Evo with the intention of keeping it for 12 - 18 months then selling it on. Even though the Evo was nearly standard at the time, about 300bhp, both Andy and I preferred driving it. Handling is superb, acceleration good in all gears and the short shift 6 speed box just put the crappy MT75 to shame. The Recaros are much better too.

When I used to drive the Escos after the Evo, I found it lardy and unresponsive and it wasn't a hard decision to make to sell the Escos and keep the Evo. Since I've had Autronic SM4 fitted I'm even happier that I kept the Evo, power wise it's about the same power as the Escos had but leagues ahead of the Escos in all respects.

Edited to add: The Evo is much better on fuel consumption too

Yeah all valid points imho

The only thing for me is, I have had a car that made driving easy and so hard to mess up [ITR]. I have also had some good mates with EVO's, one a standard 4 and the other a 330bhp 7. I have driven both of these and tbh there are stunning.

The only trouble for me is they gave the same feeling as i had in the ITR, the car is making up for your short falls [and i have many when driving]. You could see it sitting in the passenger seat with SiB aswell, he is a much better driver than me but even he got it a little wrong a couple of times. He turned to me and said if i had done that in the cossie i would have been off.

Now alot of people say why did you sell your ITR etc. Sure Staffi has had it off people aswell. The reason is the feeling of Character and how much you have to work for the experience.

After 3 laps of Dono last year i was grinning like a Cheshire Cat and new why i had sold my last car. The Saph bit me in the arse when i got cocky and tried to push it past to hard where i knew it was dodgy.

Now i will admit not every one wants this feeling. They want the best handling car etc and for Sure the EVO gives this straight from the box. I wont slag anyone for owning an EVO etc and i am sure i will own one at some point, just not at the minute i am having to much fun.

Evo's and scoobys are good cars imo but have no soul or character they are simply machines run by a computer whereas a cossie has character and soul and will always be a legend.

Rad,

I'm going to give the Saff a track day next year, probably Donington, i've done that one a few times and like the circuit

But, i want to keep the Saff and get myself an Evo to track with..

I'm an ok driver, BUT i'm not the best track driver in the world i'll admit it, SO i'd feel more at home and pushing the Evo more than i would my saff..atleast i'm being honest..

Nash,

Good points you've made there..

You can hardly call AYC or SAYC as computer aided.... LOL AYC will only come in under certain conditions.

I'd be interested to know what computer aids you think an Evo has......

Working for MAD I get to work on & drive Cossies & EVO's, as an alround performance machine the EVO is on a different Planet its not even close.
Having said that I still own a Cosworth & dont hanker after an EVO.
Drive a well sorted 600bhp EVO & your love for Cossies would just die its that clear-cut. If I was 30 again I would be modding an EVO not an out-dated Taxi.

I think it is un-realistic to compare a cosworth with an Evo. The EVO is the superior car in every way. It is todays modern equivalent of what the Cosworth WAS 20 years ago. Chassis dynamics and vehicle engineering have come a long way since the Cosworth era, so it is only normal that todays equivalent of the Cosworth is far superior. (I mean if you drive a modern Ford Mondeo even they are leagues ahead of a Cosworth!!)

However since this is a Ford Enthusiasts site, it would be wrong not to mention, that owning a Cosworth is more about owning a classic performance car rather than for its abilities. If we choose to criticise all old cars we would have to likewise condemn all the classics such as the mk2 Escort RS1800 and other such vehicles which to be honest have similarly dreadfull capabilites when but along side any modern day vehicle!

Owning an old Ford is about enjoying classic vehicles. Yes Cosworths can be fast in a straight line, but this alone is no reason to buy one. They are very basic by modern standards, and unrefined, but it is this "charm" and back to basic simplicity that will always make Cosworths, and older fords such as the classic mk2 escorts a timeless vehicle, and will continue albeit in smaller numbers to be a very collected, modified and sought after vehicle.

I would like an EVO as an everyday car I must say but don’t think I could sell the cossie for one. I just couldn’t put up with the huge deprecation that you just don’t get with a cossie. I could keep my car for 5 years and I suspect it will still be worth around the same money.. If it hasn’t rusted away

Its not just the money though of course I love the charater of the cosworths and the pedigree, plus im just an 80’s throw back anyway!! Now where’s my DepecheMode CD

I mentioned earlier that it's stupid to compare the oldest cossie to the newest Evo.... technology has evolved so much with the Evo, that's why they're called an Evolution.

Dave, if you are really, really, reeeeaaaaally nice tomorrow, I'll let you have a drive of my Evo

lamb chops Depreciation isn't as much as you think it is, a good V will still fetch £10k and that's for a car nearly 10 yrs old. A good low mileage Evo VIII still commands £15k+ depending on which model it is.

I always said I would never sell my Escos but when faced with which car to keep, I had no regrets selling it. I doubt if I would have sold it for an Evo, but I was lucky enough to buy an Evo and own both at the same time which made the decision easier.
