Default BMW X5 anyone got /had one

Looking to mibi get a X5 in the next few weeks, dont realy do a lot of miles so not overly bothered about mpg. But what are peoples opinions of the 3.0 and 4.4 heard the 4.4 is the better motor and ends up around the same mpg as the 3.0 as its slightly underpowered. What things to look out for and what sort of milage can they take ?

With being away 6 month of the year and hopefully having the cossy for weekends/good days its not as bit a problem the mpg of the petrol one. My mum has a diesel X3 and it is actualy quite good to drive, but just seems to be loads more petrol ones about for decent money and spec i want. More worried wanting to find out what sort of milage the engines are good for as there is a few with 90k but fsh.

The petrol ones will be considerably cheaper, especially the 4.4/4.6.
Sound great and drive well, nice motors.

With our experiance here the 3.0i 6 cylinder is the least expensive to repair.Alot of the 3.0d at higher end of 60k suffer from injector probs & are £500 a peice not inc labour, they also suffer from fuel lift pumps & turbos..4.4 X5,s sound great & drive well they are getting cheaper can be costly to do head gaskets & catalytic convertors.
Over the last few months we have had a few in with the 4 big rear subframe bushes which is a big job & will cost you so check for clunking at the rear when you apply the power & back off..
Alson check for battery drain as the heater resistor is common for failing & draining the battery it keeps the heater fan on when the ignition is off...

If i was to buy one it would defo be the 6cyl 3.0i just for the fact is that its the same engine as the 330,530,730 & the engines never fail or have any major work done apart from ignition coils which is common on all bm.s & if you change them from bremi to bosh you wont have that prob. They are still pokey considering the weight & they are at the right price.

I wouldnt buy a 3.0d if it didnt have warranty )just my experiance as a warranty administrator here i know what all new bmw diesels with the new high pressure pumps cost to repair if the engines go tits up or you put petrol in them..

P.M Sean Bicknell...

He has the 4.4 V8 1...Times ive been in it,its a great car, very smoth, and nippy for its size, and drags the trailor like a DREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not mu cup of tea though, and dont forget about the price hike on the rd tax for them too...

Id go for the 3.0d though if it was me,but each to there own...

Ive driven them all and if i was to choose one, it would definalty be the 3.0d with auto box.

I was going to get one 2 years ago, but im glad i didnt now as the ones i were looking at at around £25k, are going for around £15k now.

Without a doubt the 3.0d is the best driver they are quick & good on fuel & the one to have..But the things i have seen going on them i would stay clear as said above if they arent in warranty they can be costly...Like all BMW diesel models.Turbos & injectors most common..

The 3,0i is the car we see the least apart from servicing the engine is pretty much bullet proof..Seen a few gearboxes going but no more than any other bmw autobox fitted to most models..In my work we see about 35 cars day going through the workshop for repairs or servicing so you get to know what is what...

3 month ago a guy filled his x5 3,0d up with petrol drove it till it stopped got it recoverd by a local garage they fitted a new fuel filter primed it up they the guy phoned emergency services saying he broke down..we got the car & what ad happend was shocking the petrol washed all the diesel off the high pressure pump(the diesel lubricates this mind)& it seized snapped the timing chain & basicly wrecked the full engine we sent a sample of fuel to bmw & it showed signs of petrol in the tank along with metal shavings so waranty didnt cover this repair it cost the guys insurance company 10k everything the petrol touched got changed.

So if you get one thats had petrol in it a couple times it could turn nasty in the long run..

ive got a 4.8is and love it to bits - they arent everyones cup of tea but for a big 4x4 they drive supurb.with 350bhp the only down side with mine is the fuel bill (but hey you cant everything), so if i was to buy one again id definately go for the diesel. either way great car.

this is what I love about this forum, ok its a Ford forum but look how much spot on knowlege there about other makes, its all available if you just ask...

the prices in the trade between similar age / mileage petrol or diesel X5's is massively different, petrol X5, especially 4.4 are dirt cheap now, so if you are not doing lots of miles the 4.4 has to be worth looking at.

Kind of been put off the 4.4 and 4.6 because of the insurance quotes i have been getting for them nearly double the 3.0i or 3.0d More than im paying for a 450bhp cosworth
