Default High mileage Mondy TDCi's/Passat TDi's?

Looking at buying one with around 90-100k on, about 3-4 years old, ex fleet type of thing for a general workhorse and runabaout.

Anything I should be aware of? Looking at 130bhp, 6 speed version.

Ta.

The dual mass fly wheels are the weakest link.

Not the best fueling systems either as said above... and quite expensive [for a ford] when they go wrong.

No, personally. Regardless of price.

I would rather have a 110k mile old merc diesel or something, without the "common rail diesel parts tax" [it's like cosworth tax but no-one seems to be able to fix them first time ] or the worry of possibly shelling out nearly a grand on a new clutch/flywheel

Different strokes though

I've got one of the VERY early models with now 211406km (131390ish miles) on the clock.

Goes really well, not too many things going wrong allthough I had to replace the ENTIRE fuel system once. Luckily for me, I got it under warranty after months of calling, etc..... Otherwise, been a great bit of car.

Is it the 2.0 TD as opposed to the Common rail?? These were great but don't see many around for sale

Nopez, I've got the 2.0 TDCI version 130bhp.
Never liked the normal 2.0 TDDi 115bhp one. Had one of those aswell.

I just bought an 03 plate 130 tdci ghia x estate with 43k on it and 18" splitrims fro £6k and its mint, like a new car.

Drives mint, handles extrodinarily well for its size, really cant fault it to be honest. Feels very solidly made too. I cant believe what great value for money it was

90/100 high milage on a model diesel engine??? you must be joking, that aint high milage.

few years ago, my uncle had a mk2 1.8 TDI (R reg), bought it with about 120k on the clock, FSH & shit, he used & abused it everyday, he sold it with about 210k on the clock iirc & this was a few years ago....its still going today, must easly be on 250k or more now.

i would happy buy a 3/4 year old diesel mondeo with 120k+, aslong it had a FSH.

Mondeo's are good cars, i want a ST dirty diesel soon

I have a mondeo 2.0tdci running here whit 187000miles or 300000km and it's still running fine you just have to take good gasoline and you will have no problems. just the waterpump give sometimes a problem on these cars.

I prefer them personally.

The Pump Deuse engine is more reliable in my experience than 99% of the common rail stuff plus dial into the equation that most garages know how they work and can fix them without a degree in electronics.

I'm not talking about the experience of having just one, we've had loads of skodas, audis, vws etc with the different variations of the 1.9 engine in. Currently even using a Bora 130 as a hack car [and have 2x 53 plate Mondy TDCi's in stock as well if you still want one Ones a Zetec in State Blue and the others a Graphite in well... graphite both around 80k miles ] The Bora is the 6 speed one with all the GTi bits out of the golf. Ugly as sin but goes well and touch wood, has been pretty reliable for about 10k miles. I rag the fuck out of it whenever I drive it and it'll still bring back 40+ mpg. well into the 50s when you're being sensible.

Pound for pound I would prefer a passat to a mondeo although as said above the mondys are great to drive now and the build quality is exceptional on the later models - for Ford

Only major difference is you should factor in a cam belt change on the Piss Hat [obviously the mondys are all chains now] for your own peace of mind. iirc the book time for changing one on a passat is a bit longer than most due to the positioning/mounting of the engine.

I've got an S plate Passat TDi, 115bhp version I think. Done 163k miles, doesn't miss a beat, returns 600 miles to a tank around town (NO motorway miles!) so god knows what it'd be like on a decent run!

I bought my Bora 110TDi with 120k on the clock......now 3years on its just gone over the 170k mark - serviced regularly & nothing has ever failed on it as such that would stop me travelling to work & back. For 2 of the 3 years its been chipped also!!!

Its coming upto its 3rd cambelt change which I need to do pretty soon as I believe a tensioner is worn as its whining alot!!!

Cant really fault it considering the miles its done!!!

You'll be looking at an older Passat for the same money (because they're better) you can also expect around 5-8 mpg better from the Passat.

Had my Passat TDI for nearly 2 years now. It's now done 97K and has never skipped a beat. It's a lovely solid car too. I do lots of miles and it happily returns 55+mpg on a steady run, 48ish when pushing on
