I'm with Stephen in this one; if you are fit and don't suffer makor back problems then nothing beats heavy squats............

Ginge - machines don't necessarily make you ripped (if thats what you mean) Only a decent diet gets you ripped. The reason people tend to use more machines when dieting and trying to get ripped is that you usually loose some strength when dieting hard; and you want to avoid injury's too, so the machines can be safer to use than balancing free weights.

stu, your a short arse (with all due respect LOL) so you automatically can life a decent amount as you have a shorter distance to push the weight.
300+ is good.
legs are often over looked by gym heads...which looks pathetic when u see skinny legs and a huge shoulder frame lol

paul im not good at explaining things but im trying to build up then cut down but mainly i want to get stonger, getting a big frame is a bonus
theres a few peeps in the gym at the start of the summer was cutting down to look the part and now its winter again they back with us in where is stinks of BO
they are struggling again and cant get the weights/balance em
i went gym to for a few strange reasons, didnt wanna be the fat weak dad for my little one when shes at school, wanted to get movtived and also needed to get stronger for my lower back issues
ironically none of em was for what im doing now, but now im getting into it, going 4 days a week stay in saturdays so i go gym in the morning rather than sleep off hangovers and not give my little one time like i should
cheers for the advice, legs STILL hurting though,, spending all afternoon shopping for a jacket fo the missus dont help em either

biggest leg lift iv ever done was 480 kg on a sat up type machine in our locle jjb gym i bit down that hard one of my back teeth broke in half it hurt like fuck but i got the best buz iv ever had in the gym
