I was told that the Zetec engine must run a high oil temp i.e 100 deg if any less than 80 it will damage the engine hence why the zetec only runs less that 4 liters of oil ??
Brother was thinking about fitting a oil cooler+thermos stat to his car

So all the time the engine is warming up its killing itself???
so 5 mins every time you start it up?
sounds very unliely mate. its just an engine, same as any other.
works exactly the same way.
the 2 zetec engines ive had started off almost standard,
and ran Very cool if anything![Confused](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)
(they were both the original zetec silvertops)

every engine is based on the same priciples....oil can only stand certain heat/pressure until the oil film collapses and leaves metal exposed to each other with no lubrification which then results in damage.
depends more on the oil and metal (nikasil coated as an example) than on the engine make/model

my silvertop 1.8 Mk1 mondeo and my blacktop 1.6 focus were both the same.
agree with other peoples comments about temp though.

Famer is dead right...
As for protection - oil works above 60 degrees and below 120-150 degrees C.
Its mainly the aditive pack that needs to come up to temp before it works.

its the actual valves that stick, that was a silver top engine issue, they run 5/30 now as thats what they designed the engine for if that makes sence
they run hotter water temps though and run hotter for emissions, hotter engines will reduce emissions, not sure why or how but the zetec stats are now over 100 degrees unlike the old cvh's at 88 degrees

yep, must be run on 5w30 oil. If you put 10w40 in eventually the hydraulic tappets sieze up and wont actuate the valves correctly

bmw use 5w30
thicknes aint as important as the job it does
thick oil aint "better", the temps are the most important
older engines needed thick oil as the tollerences wasnt as precise as newer engines
saying that i use 10/40 in my BM cause i got LOADS of it FOC when i was at fords
