anyone got any pics of the air filter set up?

fancy maybe moving a cone behind bumper?

Look in the resto room think ther might be a pic in Twin's post of it with the bumper off, if not Doug Sterling posted a pic of the similar set up he has on hes Escos.
Think its just two 90' samcos joined together running through a hole cut in the inner wing then the filter is just bracketed up behind the arch liner.

after some of the testing we did on rollers that set up might get alot of latent heat from the rad

I can't believe that, it's miles away, plus you get all the airflow through the open foglight grill(in the escos case). It maybe different for the 3dr and saph but I don't think it will be significant.

I did nearly 195mph so how bad can it be?

Thats a really strange statement.

Instead of the word "might", it should read something like:

"the heat soak from the radiator caused ACT's that were 12 degrees higher than the same air filter mounted in the engine compartment just 150mm away from the turbo and exhaust manifold".

Sorry for all the confusion but I didnt feel confident enough to say it defo will be effected as they until the cars in question were tested you just dont know.

we tested the temps at the airbox opening with it sheilded from the rad and with it un sheilded...

This is a diff set up from the cones in the pics but I was "guessing" they will prob be effected in the same way...

Im presuming when stated tested on a rolling road, you had a huge fan pointed directly onto the radiator and intercooler.

With the intentions of keeping the temps down in those areas thus being nowhere near the Air filter....

If however you have the car on the road the air is that much greater you are going to experience clean cool air in low pressure areas which will easily supply cool air to the air filter.

we can only test what we have on the rollers...we do all we can to keep temps consistant thru out the runs...

my car can actually make two almost identical power runs over a week apart from each other due to the steps we take to ensure things are keep as consistant as possible even tho the ambients are changing.

Would think even if there was heat soak from the rad it would be a simple job to make a shield behind the bumper almost enclosing the filter between the bumper ,inner arch and rad sheild.

You have bigger things to worry about than heat mounting it there for road use (like trying to keep it clean and free flowing ) .

Cant see how it gets dirty there....... it sits sheilded by the bumper and there also is a hole/ grill in the bumper to keep a constant flow of air...

Er, you've just explained WHY it gets so dirty .

FYI Doug has to wash and re-oil his filter TWICE a month to keep it clean .

Grrrrr!!! why i ought too

The hole/vent/grill in the bumper is only showing a small fraction of the overall cylidrical area.
So yes a 10% area will get more dirty air than the rest. But the remining area will stay clean and dry.

My previous Escort didn't have issues although after the gumball it was pretty dirty , Doug's doesn't and neither does Lee's or my new car... I will take your advice and remove mine immediately!

I think what Mike is saying is that the air that a bumper mounted filter "sees" is horrible dirty air.....................

But the air that enters the engine bay (the air that a normal cone or panel filter "sees") is a much cleaner air - after all, it comes from a completely different place

Also, dont overlook the fact that a bumper mounted filter can be much larger (therefore more filter area) as the packaging means a filter that is 260mm long (10.5") x 130mm (5") can be used.

A word of warning though - watch out for massive heat soak from that ever-so-close radiator

No, I'm saying that yours in it's particular location is going to suffer from being splashed by dirty water in the wet and is going to be more likely to "Hoover" up dust in the dry.

With Martin and Lee's car not really being daily drivers and mainly seeing only track use, they will not have this kind of problem, but driving on our shit covered roads, I would not put a ROAD car filter where you have.





If you want to that is entirely up to you, but I would want it MUCH higher. It's your car, you put it where you like .

thats a similar position to the focus rs but the other side... why dont you get a sock like the focus rs filter has ? its the bit with the k&n logo obviously you would need a bigger one and fits over the filter

puddle swerving is also good practice

How do you make that out - in my eyes what he has posted goes AGAINST your positioning of the filter here not FOR it ? Sounds like he probably reduced the flow capabilities to about 80bhp driving it like that - not exactly efficient anyway !
