can anyone tell me if there is a massive difference between the gearbox in an RS and the one in an XR3i? i know that the rs has lsd, but are the ratios much different? its going in an ers2 running around 210bhp.
my speedo is knackered, the nylon drive wheel in the box has gone!
cheers!

the ratios are very similar, 5th is longer in an ERST box
if you can put up with the constant lighting up of one wheel then go for it, they are much cheaper, and in some cases a little stronger bought second hand, less abuse

i can get an xr3i box for about £40-50, the nylon wheel is about £10 but you just know its going to be an absolute bastard, probably easier and cheaper to just swap the box. i've split an old s2 box before and it was just a nightmare!

The gear rations are much shorter.
At 6250 rpm (std limiter) in 5th with a std rst box ur doing 142-143 actual mph and probably registering a good bit off the speedo (probably where 155-157 mph) would be.
With the xr3i box u have no lsd (210 bhp sounds like a bad idea with no lsd) and you will finish 5th gear with the std rev limiter of 6250 by around 140 on the speedo (if that).
When I ran a 3i box I noticed a big difference in the gearing. 5th gear literally ran out in seconds

Mk4 XR3i box final drive 4.27:1 (and so is the S1 like this)
S2 RST box 3.84:1
Quite sure the actual gears are the same, it's just the final drive that's different
