WTF Is wrong with my Pulsar! (It is the HG  pg5)
Had the ally pipe welded up, went to start it this morning and nothing , check EVERYTHING and still NOTHING
Done a compression test,
160psi on Cyl 1
156psi on Cyl 2
156psi on Cyl 3
160psi on Cyl 4
Take a wonder down to TOTD to see Chris Todd, and he reckons its the plugs and sorts me a set out , So I wonder back, take plugs out and there soaking - put new ones in, fire up and hey-presto! sorted, Cheers .. all's good, so now its running I gotta fit the new radiator
But heres the prob, fitted rad, bled water and let fans come on, checked all hoses to make sure they was hot, went for a drive and with in 15 minutes of steady driving (didn't go over 50mph) the temp went skyrocket
checked for signs of the head gasket going and none showing thats the prob
Limping home at 10/15mph smoke is pissing out the exhaust and a strong smell of oil, compressions fine so it cant be rings? no leaks either of water or oil
Im stumped
Water temp after 15/20 minutes
Oil Temp/Oil Pressure/Boost, again after 15/20 minutes

Not having a dig or anything, but did you continue to drive it up to those temps?? I would have thought pulling over BEFORE it hit the red would have been the way to play it

pmsl at your ever changing sig!!
have you checked the turbo shaft for play? ( could be causing the smoke if it's goosed)
compression test results seem very good.
hope you get it sorted, they are ace cars when they are working sweet.....don't let it piss you off too much

seems very weird..
i don't really know much about them tbh
is the water actually getting as hot as the gauge suggests? will it get that hot if you just leave it idling for a long time, or only when driven?

Legend
Shouldn't make as much difference as getting THAT hot, but you did put antifreeze back in?
Sounds like there's maybe a bit of a blockage somewhere? Is the radiator brand new?
Worst way as said above, the head
Fucking annoying for you mate, been seeing you've been having niggles with it.
Got to agree as said above though, I've had a couple of these now and they are awesome fun to drive and in my experience pretty fucking bomb proof except for the clutch issues [which is nothing considering what you get for your money and *touch wood* I've never personally had a problem with one].

First thing i did say to Radders when he rang me and told me the water pump was gone, was that the headgasket would probably be close behind.
Realistically, its going to be head gasket/head cracked/block cracked.
I just hope its gasket........and they're about Ł34 for a replacement gasket as Cookie just put a Genuine Nissan one on his Silvia

Only when driven...

Car drives fine! It was only me limping it home due to the temp
Blue smoke out the exhaust

Funny this, as on the whole properly mapped Pulsars are dead good and no bother.
But theres always exceptions!
I never get 4wd cars cause of transmission worries, but thats not been your prob so cant even say "shouldve bought a RWD"

PassionFord Post Whore!!
radders mate get it to chris todd, you need a pro eye to look at it.
it could be many things head gasket, turbo and being jap some funny water feed causing odd water temps.
what ever its going to be a tricky one to find

Was the water system bled properly as per the maunal?
Have you tried a new thermostat? (might be worth trying to run without it for a few mins to see if it makes a difference)
Is the water level holding? If you're having to fill it up, I'd suspect a leak on one of the rubber water hoses on the back of the engine.
If they're OK, then I'd have to suspect something with the water pump (even tho it's new) or maybe a blockage in the system somewhere.
Also may be worth posting on the Gtir forum to see if there's any other suggestions.
When filling, set heater control to max hot, remove bleed screw on the thermostat housing, fill radiator until water runs out of the bleed screw with no bubbles, then replace the bleed screw and fill up the radiator and coolant reservoir to max. Now you need to modify the rad cap by putting a piece of wire or similar between the rubber and the metal centre bit.(it lets the air bleed out into the overflow tank) Fit it to the radiator. Start the engine warm it up and run it a 2500rpm for 10secs, turn off, fill up the radiator. Repeat 3 times. Remove wire from rad cap and refit it as standard item. Run engine at 4000rpm and move heater control to a few positions between hot and cold , then check level again. (rad will be pressurised this time, so let it cool down or cover the rad cap well)

The water flows from the head into rad and then into the thermostat. If it's closed you won't get flow through the thermostat and therefore nothing through the rad. (thats my understanding anyway)

Deffo worth a try without the T'stat, how does it rise in temp? Will it just shoot up in a fwe seconds, or steadily rise? Does it get hot if its on boost, or just pootling round?

Obviously if you run it without a stat don't completely remove the stat as thats a very very very bad thing to do, you want an old stat you can cut it up and refit the main body to the housing.

I'm afraid to say this sounds just like my old saff that had a cracked block... . Personally I would rip the head off and see what the score is, save any more fucking around ..... Get it pressure checked and inspect the block as best you can while its still in the car ...
