Weird thing is if there's no comp loss or signs of headgasket gone then it really sounds like a water circulation problem to me.
But then..
What is also worth thinking about is that this happened a while back before you changed the pump, yes?
hmm, weird it gets that hot soo fast though if it was a cracked head or block?? I've had a cracked head before and it wasn't like that and gave headgasket type faliure syptoms. I'd be pretty suprise dif the block was cracked and you still got those decent compression readings..
It's almost like something happened a while back like some freak water blockage somewhere. What was the scenario when it 1st got hot, ie before you changed the water pump? thrashing it or anything?

buy what about the blue smoke out of the back.
is it a bit or lots of smoke Rad.
a bit may be ok,a little bit of wear in the engine/turbo etc...but if there is loads coming out then thats something else.

When you refilled the water system did you do it cold? It needs to be done cold and on an incline (aparantly).. park on incline, in car heater to max temp, remove bleed screw on thermostat housing, fill radiator until a steady stream of water flows out of thermo housing. Chuck bits back on and fast idle it at 2,5k for a while.
From reading on gtroc it seems very important to do the bleed cold and on incline making sure a nice flow comes out the bleed hole. Read a couple of posts and one guy picked up some air from split hose repaired and refilled and was getting temps off the gauge like you, the bleed above sorted it.
It may also be the case that you have picked up some air for an air lock in the first place for it to all start. There are some water pipes round the back of the block below the plenum that are a cunt to get to that can split.

this one says bout split hose, repair, then refil and temp off gauge, 2nd page explains bleed and then the guy has success.

i think just because youve got good compression doesnt mean ur oil rings are ok. the overheating could of fooked ur lower ring the oil ring hence burning oil but compression ring still ok. just a thought
