P.S. Glad to see it wasnt just me who thought about the swelling radiator due to too much pressure...but RSNissan seems to have squashed that possibility by stating that they have a habit of leaking there.......

that's great news Rad, could have ben something a LOT worse, a gasket is only a service item really....it's just a shame they aresuch an arse to change.

Ah well Rad, as ive said before that was the first thing i said to you when you rang and told me the pump had failed.
Relieving in a way though i'm sure, gaskets are cheap as chips the standard ones are good for quite high power
And at least now you have quite a good knowledge of whats good on the car and hopefully now have some faith

Although the headgasket may well be gone, the releif valve in the radiator cap should have pissed out all the excess pressure!

the header tank will still be full, but the reason your radiator has blown is because the cooling system is being pumped full of exhaust gases, thus pressurising it excessively and blowing the radiator.
There is a pressure releif valve built into the cap which gets rid of this excess pressure (gasses, not water), so the system will not over pressurise itself. If the releif valve has failed, the excess gasses cannot escape, so the system will build up a lot of pressure, and eventually blow the weakest part, i.i. the radiator.
Have you ran it on tickover with the cap off to see if you have bubbles coming up through?
There is a pressure releif valve built into the cap which gets rid of this excess pressure (gasses, not water), so the system will not over pressurise itself.
