K+N need to make some big ass cone filters I reckon
Almost makes me cringe watching jets and helicopters working in the desert, even when running filters you can just imagine how quickly they getting fucked.

Last week when I was up at Brize Norton, I saw an Apache being prepped for a flight out to Afghanistan....apparently they are getting destroyed out there, not by the emeny, but simply the abuse that the dust/sand does to the engines etc.
Quiet a lot of damage can be taken by engines though, most (70%) of the airflow through the engine goes around the engine core (ie, just through the fan). Nicks/cracks are acceptable along quiet a large area of the blade (near the root is a nogo, due to the extra stresses). Its when debris goes through the core that problems start to arise.
Here's a pic of what does happen when stuff does go through the core....this was caused by the head of a (ally!) rivet that went through!
Nicks to the leading edge of the compressor blade, tip curl and a chuck of the rotor path lining missing!. This is a pic we took when we borescoped the f*cked 757 at Brize
