Default WRC Long stud trouble-Need help ASAP!!-sorted-thanks MSD!!

Well, I have had my block centre 6 long studded, the problem I have now is that the head is too small to fit a decent size socket onto the 18mm nuts . I have contacted the company who did them, and they recon a normal socket should fit fine. I am just wondering if its becasuse its a small turbo escort cossie head the bolt holes in the head are slightly smaller?

I have had a few sockets machined down, but I have split the "good" one on the final torque stages. .... I have been advised to torque the studs as normal, ir stg 1 20-25nm, stg 2 45-50 nm, then stg 3 170-180 degrees final turn. Does this sound right, as the socket split at about 120 degrees. What can anyone reccomend doing the long studs to?

Apparently the only other option is to take the head back off, strip it down and machine out the head bolt holes to give a bit more clearence, I am very unhappy about doing this, as I don't want to take any strength away from the areas around the lifters .....

Has anyone else ever run into problems like this?

The problem of some studs is that the nuts are too big especially if you have a 2wd head. When I bought the studs for my mate to fit a 2wd head the dealer gave me 2 options, one of them being a different size of nuts (16mm) so the socket can fit easilly like when you fit ARP's. When we fitted them to 4wd heads we had that type of problem so we machined a socket to enter the head. ( At first we took the extra material of the socket by grinding and it cracked immidiately then we machined another one down with a torn and it hold for several engines) .

surely using an impact socket machined down would be better than a normal socket.

there is just notenough room to use an impact socket . The way round it is to use K nuts, still the same thread but a much smaller head size .

I did , but it's now sorted.... I first used a brand new (Ł13.50 ) impact socket machined down, but that split .. So I went and bought another one today, but only bought a cheap one. The difference being that the impact one had chamfered edges on the hex, the cheap one (Ł3.50) just a plain hex. Had it machined down to 22.9 mm, still a very tight fit, just goes in and I used a bit of oil to help it, but the extra bit of metal in the edges of the hex has held up

Also a BIG thanks to Stu@MSD , took the time out of his more than hectic day to give me a few pointers, the head is now down and torqued correctly .... So to say I happy is an understatement
Thanks for the replys anyway guys ./... A useful thread for anyone else using long studs though

Yes they are, I was worried about the last bit, the 170-180 degree turn , feels horrid , just worried about shearing the stud, as that would be a whole world of hurt. But Std settings, with the 95Lbs/ft break-off check, none of them or the std head bolts moved so its all good ... Also don't forget to copper grease the threads and under the washers... Stu's tip, made the process a lot better

We got smaller nuts so will be no problem to work on a 2wd head!!! Sometimes smaller is better!!!
