Default pinto eng chewing fuel pumps

got a 2.0 pinto engine that keep on breakin the manual fuel pump ,its broken two pumps now by breaking the retaining clip that holds the spring on the shaft of the pump
now i am i just bolting it straight on like the old one but .....is there surposed to be a spacer on it ,between engine and pump???? a far a i know its the right pump, as i hav double check with the motor factors ,but i am totally lost at why its doing this

its worth saying i never had the engine running on the manual pump ,it had a badly wired in electric pump (think i see why they done that now )which has now knackered up too and that why i am trying to get the manual one to work

As said spacer is needed, otherwise it does break the pump, as angle of pump rod inside goes mental.
