Gus,
I've just been involved in a 15K plus desktop rollout of some software called Night Watchman, this product workouts carbon foot prints etc and most of all power saved by putting the desktop into standby or shutting down.
It's the Hard disk and DVD rom that sucks the power and unless the drive powers down after 30 minutes or less you an't saving anything by leaving it on 24/7
Sad I know but if you give me the make and model of your device I can tell you what your not saving by leaving it on......
Cheers, Warren

"(if its what you can call music)" Gus, you'll be swapping the S1 for a rover with a blanky and your trainers for some slipper if you carry on like that
As my old man would say (from the comfort of his lazychair with feet tucked up firmly in his slippers ), when you pay the bills, you can leave it on for as long as you like,

PassionFord Post Whore!!
whats best for the computer is leave it on or leave to off, warming and cooling down is not whats best.
but modern main boards should be totaly fine.
my advice is turn of, but not every time you make a cup of tea

well, the computer is taking allot more power when is turned on, than it uses when its just running on idle.
it all depends on what you running? (set up on the computer)
you could turn the hdd off if you right click on the
desktop
go to screen saver
then Power
then you could decide to turn off hdd after so and so,and computer so and so
and so one.
....and so
and so one
but it aint using allot of you thinking that
400w power supply is not using 400w at all time
i have hmmm.. think its 9 hdd on my server, they use around 100w
so it aint much
but god night

iirc i worked it out some time ago and there wasn't much in it... bt i have a more powerful pc, so wheather it would be too much differrent now... but warrren seem to have given the answer now anyway!
as for the lightbulb myth, its for strip lights only! as they take alot of power to start up, which is why you get ony a few at a time lighting up, but then only take a trickle to stay on! dunno what the mythbusters did... but they normally get the myth half wrong to begin with

It will use more power left on.
Standby is a better option, but even so turning it off for half the day is going to save the most.
Tell your boy to stop being a smart ass and get his facts right

well, offourse it would use more power if it was on 24/7 in a month or if you have turn it on and off 2 of those weeks
you cant really compare if you dont use the computer over 24 hours where you have 1 comp on 24 hours, and you are turning one on and off lets say every hour
so you have to look at the time aspect here too
