Im sure that all tyres rated to a certain speed rating must take more stick. Published ratings must be lower than the actuall speed they can safely handle.
If a tyre is rated to 180mph id be pretty confident that at 185mph it would not start to deteriate.
Be interesting to hear from Martin what Dunlop can conclude from the tyre he may have sent back to them.
Either way this can happen at any time to anyone, it could have happend at 60 or 80mph the results that occured would have been the same too i imagine.
Thankfully the side walls as mentioned above are alot stiffer on a race tyre and this more than likely kept the car rolling straight and stopping safely.

Can I ask, in the event of a blow out like this how do you bring the speed down safely?
I.E stamp on the brakes and pray for the best, or gently with the brakes, and keep hold of the wheel!
I don't know a guy that is as unlucky, yet lucky at the same time!!!!

Taken from the Highway code....
Tyre blowouts can be dangerous, especially if you are driving fast, because they can cause your vehicle to lose control.
A rear-tyre blowout will usually cause the vehicle to sway from side to side.
If you do have a blowout while driving, you should:
-grip the steering wheel tightly
-ease off the accelerator
-try to keep the vehicle on its path
-signal and steer to the side of the road once you've reduced speed.
I hope you used your indicators too Martin!

not being funny but how could he have died from that?
i realise the car could have rolled etc...but the car would more probably just pull to one side...on a flat surface with no central reservation or other cars to hit i cant see peoples massive amazement at him being able to control this incident?

BOSCH MAN so how much do you think it cost Ford to develop the escort cosworth? Ł100,000???
you mong it even costs in the millions to develop Golfs, Focis and Corsa's.

he is saying that supercars have been developed to go that fast - a process which costs millions. the escort cosworth was never intended to do those kinds of speeds and is implying that anybody who has modified their engine to make enough power to do so should equally spend some effort on aerodynamics, suspension and tyres capable of coping with those kinds of sustained speeds.
imo.
i'm not agreeing one way or the other, just trying to hep poor misunderstood phil

Glad your alright and hope to see your car fixed soon.
Looking at the picture of the tyre debris the tyre looks well worn. I know from my experience with the same tyre that they do tend to wear quickly.
What sort of usage/milage have your tyres seen prior to this incident?

Some people are happy to flip burgers their whole life, some want to cure cancer, some want to sit on their arse and do nothing/drink beer, some want to fly to Mars, some want to build cars that are stupendously fast...

any stump can go fast in a straight line,i thought martins car was more designed to go wound a curve.
