Is a milometer a legal requirement?

I would have thought yes as they write down the odometer reading for your MOT.

But I suppose it doesn't mean they have to work?

A mileometer is the MINIMUM legal requirement.....you don`t actually need a speedo by law technically...

true! Just so long as you have something that can give you an indication of your speed, albeit a revcounter, wet finger stuck out of the window etc etc

You don't need it for MOT. I've tested cars before will the same mileage as the year before, If MOT testers are driving cars up the road on an MOT to check mileage and speedo's they shouldn't be. (only to check brakes on 4x4s).

I was under the impression that if a vehicle was capable of travelling at more than 25mph then legally it is required to have a speedometer?
