Default bottom end rebuild

hi all,

Im just wondering whats involved in installing new big& little end bearings into an engine?

Does it involve a lot of expertise, im not totally useless when it comes to cars, just never attempted anything like this before?

Regards
Dave

Unless you have accurate measuring devices, just take apart and get it(crank) measured elsewhere, but yes very easy, so long as you keep it clean.
You sometimes have to lap the thrust bearing ones though that's all, on a sheet of glass covered with old knackered emery cloth.

fitting the bearings is the fairly easy part,

but its measuring and deciding if the crank is good enough ,or does it need a polish/grind?

if you are taking the engine apart change rings mains big end littel ends thrust washers and oil pump and if it needs a grind do it and and if it needs a rebore do that also i build engines daily and have seen people make a mess of ther engines coz they thought it was fine to put back to gather and dont for get to glaze bust the bore if you fit new rings and oil every thing with fresh engine oil

Tolerance is a collective word for accurate measurements and torque settings.

So, if you were to say all the tolerances were correct, you would be relating to the torque settings on all the bolts and all the correct measurements for the bearings and rings...etc.

when things are made they are made to a tolerance for example something will be machined to 35mm +/- 0.05 so if you machine it and its between 35.05 or 34.95 will be within tolerance
