Default any1 ever rebuilt thier own turbo?

a friend and i have a knackered std t3 turbo and most companies want £200 ish to rebuild it.
you can get the rebuild kits from flea bay, and we were wondering if we should have a go at doing it ourselves, it says no special tools are needed and any competent mechanic can do it,
seeing as he is a mech, and i was, were prob gunna give it a go,

if it proves too hard or something goes wrong we can get it properly done later

any1 else had a go?
how did u get on?

Building it is not that much of an issue.

WHO IS GOING TO BALANCE IT AFTER THE BUILD?

as said it deffo needs balancng afterwards......the vibration of an unbalanced turbo will destroy the soft bearings in minutes

and when you say if it goes wrong you can get it done properly afterwards? ..... is that after the compressor wheel mashes and sends all the metal through the engine?

if your only changing seals and bearings as they worn, you dont need to.

only need to do that is wheels are damaged etc and being changed.

you have to remove the compressor wheel though to change the bearings etc.....

i wouldnt trust guessing it back on to be 100%

thats like taking a tyre off a wheel and not balancing it afterwards...just not good practice

I dissagree. I have built many Turbo's and use a local Garret Turbo dealer to balance my units every time. As said the comp wheel is locked in place via the nut (Left hand in most new built turbo's, std thread with old skool stuff) once that but is undone it will put the shaft and comp wheel out of balance. The chance of locking it back into place the exact same position is slim to none. A chance i wouldnt want to take risking my engine and filling the cooler, head etc with alloy.

Regards

How would unbolting it suddenly made a balanced wheel or shaft out of balance?

I would personally get it balanced, but if you do strip and rebuild it, just mark the nut to the comp wheel, and count the threads showing, then put it back to EXACTLY the same place. Should not have changed the balance as no floating components have been changed.

I have put them back together after takin apart for inspection and i have never once had it lock back into the same place where it wont need balancing.

EVERYTIME even if the turbo was fine before taking apart

IMO BALANCE THE TURBO.

i rebuilt the one in my old 200sx

seal and bearing kit was £25iirc

like said, if you mark it all before you take it apart you should be ok

i forgot tho and remembered when i when i went to put it back together

was fine for the 2 months i had the car before i sold it, i used it every day too, and never heard the new owner have any probs with it

i must have put a good 600 miles on it, and i dont exactly drive like miss daisy lol

BUT - and here is the but...

my 200sx was a peice of shit, so if the tubo did shit itself, i would have give a fuck anyway...

but it didnt

would i rebuild the turbo im using on the 3dr myself and continue to nail it everywhere?

No, i woudnt take the risk on 7k worth of enigne for the sake of £200

well, that reply was totally useless
