Default What's the advantage of a screamer pipe

Juist wondered what gains you get from having a screamer pipe as I've never heard of them being fitted to cosworths?

Pinched this off another website.

Screamer pipe is the external wastegate exhaust pipe that legally should be joined back into the exhaust before the cat. However to be a proper "screamer pipe" it does not join into the exhaust, it dumps straight out into the atmosphere creating a noise similar to a Jet at full noise when it starts to take off. Very loud, very cool, very illegal, very annoying after the first week.

When you run an External Wastegate, which for most is unnecessary, the Wastegate has a vent. This is a pipe which carries the excess bled-off boost pressure and this pipe is often re-introduced into the exhaust making the car no louder than normal. However, most opt for an Atmospheric vent pipe where the excess pressure is dispelled via a separate pipe, which is usually unsilenced and tends to be fooking noisy.

Running an Atmospheric pipe is best for performance as it takes away these gasses from the main exhaust, therefore reducing the strain on it, but since most Ford owners have over-sized exhausts, it is no real problem re-introducing it.

Make sense?

......and Yes they are fucking annoying once the novelty is over. They tend to burble when you are on light/medium throttle, just as the wastegate opens and sounds awful. Imagine this as you are cruising at motorway speed.

Why would people run external wastegates? Is it when the standard wastegate can't cope with big boost?

I don't think that they are illigal though IMO as old porsche turbos and the ferrari F40 use them from the factory.

One huge disadvantage of a screamer pipe is that you will 100% get thrown off a track day unless there is no noise limit. As C said screamers have had their day!

rally cars have anti lag and small plates but are classed as road legal

and the F40 aint been made for a while,,, they also dont have a cat though i could be wrong

the 430 has a actuator on 2 of the 4 rear pipes though that open a gate so when driving round town its not as loud untill you boot it,,,, guess they done that for a reason if you hear one

martin thats not a problem for say,,,,, 90% of the people who have "track cars"

and they do about 1 track day a year and the rest of the time its racing on the roads/ getting blow jobs of 15 year olds

Ginge, years ago I tried a divider in the housing of my turbo to convert an Internally 'gated set-up to run a Screamer pipe. It was gay and didn't really work properly.

My new Externally 'gated set-up will run a Screamer until I get round to doing something about it, which will be days or at the very most, weeks. Certainly not permanent.

you could always fit a "Y" section with a butterfly valve onto the screamer pipe if you wanted a choice to have it or not... they do that on old muscle cars so you can get the burble, but when the pigs are around then they close the valve and its silent again!

just realised you would need 2 valves to stop the exhaust blowing...
