Default FAO tech support bods working for ntl/virgin media

Hi all,

Another PF user and good friend of mine has some difficulties with his cable connection. I am pretty sure it's something to do with ntl, rather than his computer.

He's been without broadband at home for months now and getting through to tech support and being fobbed off because you're not that tech savvy is a joke

Can you help me/him cut through the nightmare that is ntl customer support.

I've got a whole host of details I can PM to a keep volunteer

Thanks in advance
Greg

As far as I can tell, the PC is talking to the modem ok via USB cable, gets an IP address from modem, I can get to the modem's status web page, and this is where it all goes down hill.

Modem says it hasn't got an IP address from NTL DHCP, along with a whole host of things it says it hasn't done.

Lights on the modem, sync and ready are never steady on together, mostly sync on, ready flashing.

I have a feeling either the modem is somehow screwed up, or, ntl won't let the modem attach itself to their cable network.

Rebooted PC, modem, etc... to no avail...

They have NTL/VM employees there who help on the site.

Registered and done a little search which came up with results not found through google.

All points to a problem with ntl or modem being bust.

I live out of franchise and I want satellite tv so it makes sense to move it all over to sky Shame because it's been dead reliable apart from when I played with the old modem

Fair comment
However, sky are pretty new to the broadband game, I use Demon for broadband and also have SKY, works out more expensive, but I cannot fault Demon for their service and don't dare move for fear of worse service.

Carphone warehouse/AOL are offering a free dell laptop (worth around Ł400) for a two year contract tie up, really tempting since my other half could do with a more modern laptop, but I just don't trust CPH/AOL

Confirmed it to be line or modem issue

One of mates is on AOL and it's not very good. I wouldn't personally use them.

Glad you're getting somewhere with finding the fault.

Not cheap indeed, but I'd rather pay an extra fiver a month for peace of mind than pay for a cheap service that's not there when I need it
