You need a 'Circular' ploariser, and give them the thread size, should be 52mm on an 18-55mm kit lens, check though

Just ask for a replacement D40X battery and then a nice new Lowepro bag could set you back £80 lol

Dan answer your bloody phone it can get lonely down there on your own hey

We need to catch up for dinner before you go to the Carib and talk about a few things

Christian l know a few people that have Hasslebrands and Leica's and with good zoom lenses etc i can quite believe it could add up to 10K

Wide angle lens => take a look at the Tokina 12-24 f4 .
Brilliant lens at half the cost of the Nikon equivalent.
Have the same lens and one that I uses often at car shows.

Nail on the head...

Someone always offers a solution somewhere which = an overall better option/price than Nikon/Canon itself, whoever it is that manufacturers your camera.

Hence why I had Sigma as a pose to Nikons version...

I believe that to reduce costs, Nikon have removed the autofocus motor from the body meaning the lenses have to support receiving the necessary signals from the camera, and focus using their own motors.

Net effect is that some older nikon (or other) lenses that were compatible with older nikon cameras no longer work with the newer cameras.

As for polarisers, here is an example of how a polariser makes a difference to a picture (taken same time same place), look for differences in the water and sky.

Nikon D40
18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6GII ED lense that came with the body
Nikon AF-S 55-200mm1.4-5.6G ED lense

I would stick with what you've got for now, explore what you can do, learn as much as you can, then see where your kit becomes the limiting factor, then buy what you need
Although a flash would probably be a good idea, unless you're only shooting landscapes and cars the pop up flash that comes on the camera is a gimmick more than anything.

Er, you could put the camera in full automatic mode to start with, get used to the controls, the lens, etc... then explore some of the more advanced manual features.

Have you read these excellent (if I may say so) articles ?

Circular polariser which is of same diameter as your lense(s), you might need two if your lenses have a different diameter (should be written on the end of the lens, e.g. O 44mm).
An alternative is to buy a polariser that fits your largest diameter lens, then get adapter rings to go from smaller to larger.

Cost for polarisers vary lots, depending on manufacturer, can't advise as to whether cheap ones are much worse than expensive ones though

Hama do very good polarisers, as to Hoya & Sigma

I stuck a cheap £10 one on mine off eBay to test the water and it has served me well...the pics below show to good saturation in colours bought out by using a polariser:

After looking at all of these "look what santa bought me posts" I feel a little left out. I'v been buying the odd few bits lately namely a Sony tripod which I got for only £20 out of the Sony Centre where i worked as an installer many years ago, a few sd cards etc. So i went hunting on amozon last night and now i have a tripod i would like a remote so i can keep the shutter open for long periods without getting camara shake, they look really cheap aswell

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-4730-M...8836615&sr=8-1

To help me with my skills i also like the look of this which should tell me loads I dont know. Has anybody watched it ?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Magic-Lanter...8836615&sr=8-1

After looking for many hours for the different lenses I am still unsure of the correct one to go for . My main thing i'm looking to use it for will be track days but i'm not sure what distance i will need as it's a little hard to judge standing in the shop ?

Any advice or example shots will be mucho help.

many thanks Daryl

Daryl,

I use a Sigma 70-300mm APO DG Super Macro II on my D50, and get results like these...

http://www.djaphoto.co.uk/zenphoto/B...0Rally%202007/

Some of those aren't on full 300mm zoom either, so you can see what sort of reach the lens gives you.

The aperture is f4-5.6, so on full zoom you will be at f5.6, so in lowish light conditions don't expect great pics from bog standard settings, you will be looking to up your ISO, probly around 400-800, and shoot RAW. I also opt to overexpose my shots in low light, sometimes as high as +5 stops, thats how I got my shots towards the end of the Rally pics that I have posted in the link above.

For around £150, don't think you will go wrong with that lens, and I have had some comments on mine in the past that are those of a surprised nature seeing as I'm using a 'cheapish' lens in the eyes of the pros, and they have been impressed by my shots.

Good luck, the fun begins now!

Some very nice photo's indeed

I'v had a look at the price of the lense that you recommend and it seems very good value . I also notice that your using a D50 . The limiting thing about my camara (D40x) is that it has no auto focus motor in the body so it has to be a certain type of lense. Do you know if it is compatible ?

The other lense i was looking at was this one

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-55-200...sbs_ce_title_2

This also has VR which i think is vibration reduction. Does the sigma have this or is it something you dont really need ? Not sure this will have the range i would want either.
