Default Headgaskets....

I need a new one

Driving the cabbie home from the garage its been sat in at my mates for the past year to my own garage earlier, plodding along giving it a 'few' beans and KA-POW white smoke eat ya heart out

Its running a standard Ford headgasket at the mo or it was, what should i replace it with? Don't really want to go thru this again if i can help it

Std's perfect, if fitted correctly, look after and no coolant issues.

The OE Ford Gasket is the best one IMO, but you will need to get the head checked for alignment and pressure tested if you want to be sure.

Thinking about it now, i think the one that was on it was a patent one from a local motor factors.

I'll get down Fords tomorrow then, should i get the stretch bolts while i'm there? Anything else i should get?

Christian and Beccy

What would of made it got like that? To much booooooooooost?

I wouldn't have a clue why its gone Alex, its sat still in a garage for a year.

I'd let it tickover for at least 20 minutes before driving it and then brought it home, mind you i did give it some welly on the dual carridgeways on route.

Which is about 6spi more than yours

Sorry to hear it paul, you sure its the H/G and not something else? get a leak down test and compression test done to confirm before taking the head off.

Is it possible the cheap motor factors H/G has corroded while its been sitting in storage and then you take it fo a blast and pop.

IMO you can't beat the std ford headgasket, would be perfect for your needs (was fine on my RST )

Head Gaskets fail for many reasons. Such as....

1. Poor quality gasket
2. Head warped
3. Head cracked
4. Det
5. Incorrectly fitted/Torqued (caused by dirty/corroded threads in the block for example)

To name a few.

Personally, I would get the head into someone who can check it for the stuff I said. Then run an M10 tap down the holes and clean them out with brake-cleaner/airline, then refit the head with either a Genuine Ford or Payen head gasket and bolts. If you want to do the job a little more properly, coat both sides of the head bolt washers with Moly Grease before following the proper tightening sequence. That really is worth doing, but only if everything is clean.

Then, you'll be almost exactly where I am, with a setup that is putting up with 30psi etc. BTW, my gasket is Payen.

You heard how the bolts 'creak' when you go through the tightening procedure? This stops that from happening so you don't feel like they might snap and not tighten them fully.

Also, if the washers/bolts bind as you are tightening them, it will give a false impression of them having reached the required torque.

wake up Stav, theres many things that can cause a head gasket to go, if the car has been sitting for a year more than likley the gasket has rotted away.

always use ford bolts they look greenish on the sides and are coated so will not rust in and snap like lots of after market ones.

Paul, Dan suggested the Payen one as they are the manufacturer of the OE gasket (it really is IDENTICAL except for the Ford logo), but they are usually cheaper.
