Diva... its not quite as simple as you make out by the way mate! You say its a well run company??? It would seem not mate!!!

I am very tempted at this level though... only because the Government have said they will help with its Liquidity problems in the short term.

HUGE volumes traded today, almost 188m shares already traded TODAY!!!

at current share price that means almost 40% of the company has changed hands... TODAY!

Im tempted to buy them as i dont see the government being able to let them fold, but I havent really got the cash available these days that I can afford to lose, so will probably not risk it, as gambling with money you cant afford to lose is a mugs game!

even if Northern Rock went tits up, all debts/mortgages etc would get passed on anyway so nothing would change.

WTF has that got to do with 3x lending and decent rates......it`s this narrow sighted attitude that causes such big share fluctuations when everyone panics..........
An awful lot of those assets are tied up in mortgages, so whilst it is financially solvent, it does not have sufficient liquid assets to survive this kind of crisis without external help.

Re. the mortgages, I was pointing out how they'd expanded, and their ratio of long-term assets to customer deposits has increased accordingly, above almost all other banks.

I'd be very interested to know what the NBV per share of the company is.

I have a mortgage with Northern Rock, fixed until around October next year and my boyfriend's just gone self employed.

My mate tried telling me last night to move my mortgage to someone else.... cos if a debt collection agency took over it would go sky high... yeah yeah, okay, £2.5k to get out of it and no one will want to give me another mortgage cos of my partner going self employed.

I am staying where I am til my fixed rate's up and we can get a better deal elsewhere.

Don't think its anything to worry about and if it does go, it will be the bank of england or another bank that will take it on.

yours (and my) mortgage will be passed to another lender - thats all.

If you look at its this very fact that has put NR in this situation in the 1st place. The American mortgages to be precise!

They just dropped 10% as apparently there are takeover rumours and they are valuing the company at less than £1bn....

On their website is states:

Northern Rock have appointed Capita Registrars to provide share registration services to shareholders with effect from 2 February 2004.

http://companyinfo.northernrock.co.u...registrars.asp
Might be worth emailing them?

In my previous post I was wondering what the NBV per share was.

I found out later on a Ferrari forum that it is around £1.80 per share.

Going on the basis that 188m shares is 40% of the total, this would value the company at £846million:

(188m / 40%) x £1.80

Seems very understandable that bids are being made <£1bn. You could not attribute any positive goodwill in the form of customer loyalty or reputation.

Did you invest in the end?

the govt is bascily going to make them a public company if they decide to "lend" them money so why not just get the bank of england to buy them out and secure everything back to the way it was?
all you need to do is change the headed paper and it's business as usual

Well, my wifes uncle owns www.directsharedeal.com, based in Galsgow and can act as your broker if you so wish.

Give them a call and see what they can do.

I don't think it will - there's very little news that could raise the share price, other than a takeover @ £3bn which simply won't happen.

Damn you for quoting Diva first though!!
