Default Brake Pads

Right the warning light has just come on in my Golf telling me to check the brake pads.
2 questions - how long have I got before the pads are grinding on the discs?
and how much would you expect to pay for 4 sets of pads?

I think that answer depends on how you drive it TBH.
if you drive it like miss daisy,a lot longer than if you drive it like you stole it.
For a set of pads,my fronts on my Impreza needed changing at 27,000 mls, rears are fine so they tell me.
The fronts cost me £120ish inc delivery.

Maybe, if youre nice and gentle, possibly more.

Just keep an eye on it,check say in 50 mls time and make a judgment call on it.

To be honest, I wouldn't have the first clue how long a pad would last by looking at it, gonna try and get it done on friday but it's going to the garge for it, as I would end up putting them on backwards upside down and the wrong way round. If its new pads all round, will I be lucky to get them under £150? Its a 1.8 turbo GTi?

messcortmk6 - don't be a dick!! If I don't know how to change them then I'm gonna pay someone that does!! I'm not gonna risk the brakes failing when my family is in the car for the sake of a few quid, it's got nothing to do with being lazy

Am I the only one that always changes the discs along with the pads as a matter of course?

And as said above, if the lad is more comfortable paying for it done then fair enough. I could change pads, discs, shocks and all that on my car but I couldn't even begin to try and fix an engine problem.

Should I say fuck it I'll do it anyway cause it saves me a few quid?

You will get at least 1000 miles more from them, the wear indicators are set quite generously on VW, so long as not doing a few rings trips!!
Try NOT to use vw parts, because you can get pads cheaper that are better.
You are right to be putting it into a garage if not confident, but these things are dead easy, do you not know anyone who tinkers with cars as these can be done in your sleep.
Some pads now come with screech clips, which I love the sound of.
I only got 3000 miles out of my last rear set of pads on my cossie, so am always looking at my brakes!!
