My old mans got one - definitely reliable, comfortable, handles quite well etc.
It's usual family car quick, nothing particularly exciting but at the same time its not boring.

Dull unfortunately

with the spec: leather recaros, xenons, climate etc they can be very nice cars

handle well etc, but the engine just felt a little lifeless to me

does it have to be a ford? depending on budget, a civic type r or leon cupra would be far more exciting to own

ST170 is £5 grand or less

Lots of car for the cash! Not particularly quick but great handling and nicely specced

Bit thirsty tho

cheers lads,

well my budget is gonna be about £5k

TBH yes ford, majority of the other cars around that price just dont interest me, i'd have an EVO tho but thats defeating the object

good spec n reliability, is the only thing that lets the ST170 down the power?

I was just gonna get a cheap Mk5 RS2000 so was expecting that sort of lame power anyway

prob only keep it until next year n end up getting another cossie

just fancy the new'ness n good spec

Not a bad car but at the same time not the best car but for £6-7k alot of car for money. Think you will find it hard to find a ST170 for around £5k or less and any you find will be the bottom end of the quality market

Handling good for road use but lost for track use.

Rattles from the cat heat shields are a constant cause of trouble.
The duel runner inlet is a expensive replacement waiting to happen (a few gone wrong)
Engine revs right to 7200rpm to get the most out of it
overall car spec is excellent if you find one with xeon lights, climate control, half leather or even the full leather recaro seats, switchable traction control.

I liked my grey ST170 but its not a patch on the FRS i have now

I've got one as a daily driver - they're great for reliability, handling etc. and as long as you keep the revs above 5k - they're quite good fun.

Driving normally - they're a bit flat.

And you'll find that 100 miles is around £20 with mixed driving styles - i normally get around 275-325 miles to a tank

I own ST170 and I'm loving it. I'm running at 177bhp with Bluefin & K&N panel filter. Use it as daily driver, good at cornering/handling, etc.

Have a test drive, you'll like it.

100 miles to £20 dunt sound too bad, i can live with that! well good compared to the cossie

what are they like for tuning? cam's, zorst chip etc?, could you get them nearer the 200bhp mark or is it too costly?

yeah i also considered the ST24 as they're cheap as chips, what they like tho?

rab - i've seen a few now for around the £5k mark

Bluefin, Induction kit, Exhaust, Exhaust cam pulley and a thorough setup on a dyno should see you well up into the 180's if not 190's

The inlet cam pulley is variable so can't be changed for a vernier one. The exhaust cam pulley can be changed to a vernier and dialled in on a dyno to release nearly 10bhp

ST170 is a disappointing car IMO, said this a lot lately and offended a fair few people

£5k would get you an early one, perhaps on an 02 plate or something and iirc they were riddled with issues.

I heard they are very hard to get more bhp out of the st170 and when people have tuned them they have been disappointed with what little bhp they gained

Unless my info is totally wrong that I’ve read over the years

I get around 300 miles from a full tank - and that's when I am heavy footed.

I'm sure I can get more miles if I drive like granny.

Trouble is add the price of those parts up and its about £1000-1100 and alot of money for only 10-15bhp gain. Really poor value for money when it comes to trying to tune the ST170.

btw i only used to get 280 miles to a tank of fuel and 320 on a motorway run averaging about 28mpg town driving and 34mpg motorway driving.

You have to remember that ST170 has been heavly modded to achieve the 170bhp.

Mate of mine has one ona 52 plate with all the goodies (leather, climate, stereo pack). Nicely spec'd car, quiet, refined handles well but as has been said it lacks a bit in the go department. It's not slow, it just under delivers.

Mate had a problem with the control box for the variable inlet packing up and a leak from the slave cylinder but that's been it. For him this is pretty good as he drives in a way that give hooligans a bad name.

Personally I quite like them and was very tempted by one myself but ended up going VAG instead
