Default Windows XP Experts.......

We have 2 accounts on our PC, the main Administrator account and a Limited account for Rosie, Beccy's daughter. However, despite my best efforts, she can still potentially see stuff I don't want her to see.

I have a second hard drive and although there is nothing particularly private on there, I want that to be a place that she can't get to. However, when I 'Right-Click' on it and view the security options, the 'Make this folder private' option cannot be selected. Nor can it for any of the folders on that drive (or any other drive on the machine).

Additionally, Rosie seems to have access to all my programs. I have just installed 'PKR' online Poker game and I don't want her being able to use that, amongst others.

What can I do??!!

I am shocked by how clever kids her age are too. I am quite technically minded, but even I was shocked to learn that the use of Bebo is banned at her school, but they are still accessing it using Proxies. I didn't even know what a Proxy is, but now know that it enables them to access Bebo indirectly. Crafty lil fuckers.

hehe, yap kids today are clever

answer to you question

XP accounts with limited access do work...in a way. but sadly not fully.
you did make all files "private" when you did make your account?
run it again and make sure you did it the right way

you could try this one to

http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock/?id=gb
or this

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Securit...e-Folder.shtml

just for the files

as some progs would be installed on both accounts(as you have found out) and be fully accessible from both accounts

first.

its 1 way to bypass the account you have made and log on to the computer as a administrator
not many people know this, but its actually very very easy

when you start the computer you just hit the "F8" button and start the computer in security mode

then you would get up, in your case 3 accounts

Administrator
Your administrator account
Rosie´s account

and off course the top administrator account has no password as it ain't accessible from the control panel --->manage user

So to delete that user... and 2/3 other ones,
right click on the "my computer icon" go to manage
then click on the right side where you see "local user and groups"

then its open
users and groups

go to users and delete all the accounts that you dont use
guest cant be deleted!

or it could... but i dont want to explain that now!

In XP, use the gpedit.msc tool. IIRC there are options to deny access to certain hardware unless you are a member of a certain security group.

Don't know about the software though, sorry.

Cheers

I have a removable hard drive and I have locked that with a free program called folder lock, you need to enter a password to access it

Alex - Now I'm even more confused!! I will try and get my head round that lot though.

collierm - I have just had a quick look at that tool, there is alot of info in there, so I will continue looking!! LOL.

Metpol - I am looking now for free software to do this, it looks like there are a few programs.

I also tripped over spy software for MSN Messenger. Anyone used any of these?

The joys of pre-teenage kids eh?
