Default Cat topic - Should I "adopt" local cat?

Bit of an odd one, just wanted to get any opinions really.....

Moved into my house in April, and since then, this lovely black cat has been hovvering around outside most days.... It's really friendly, and comes to greet me in the morning, when I get home from work, and nearly everytime I step out the front door for a smoke. Same if I go in my garden!

She's (think it's a she, haven't looked mind ) is proper friendly - always wants to come in the house (come home from work, open door, before I'm in the cat is poking her head in, if I leave back door open she'll strut in bold as brass) - if I sit in the van for a few seconds with the door open in the morning, damn cat gets in the van LOL...

Thing is, after chatting with a passerby the other night, it appears the cat might be homeless. Passerby said she has seen this cat outside this block of 5 houses for nearly a year now. Cat doesn't wear a collar, but isn't skinny or looks mulnurished. Furs quite good condition too - fairly sheeny and shiney...

So makes me think if it is or isn't homeless....

I love animals and intended to get a cat soon anyway, but wondering if I should adopt this one - basically take it in and feed it. She'd be out all day anyway, just let her live there in the evenings....

Bit worried if I should tho, as I don't want to adopt her and take her in if she is someone elses cat, as I know I would be heartbroken if that happened to me....

DOn't think it belongs to any of my neighbours......

First thing, take the cat to the vet and see if it's identichipped. If not......then keep an eye out. If the cat is in good shape the chances are he / she isn't homeless, unless everyone is putting food out for it and it's being looked after elsewhere !

Cats can lookafter them selves, i have a rescue cat and it lived outside for 2 years before i got her

Take the cat in, and put some posters up "cat found" and leave them up for 2 weeks that cats yours.

Theres a cat that does the same thing at my house.

thing is, its getting fed by 2 of my neighbours and its taken to going to my aunts house and sleeping in her bit every now and then. shes got 2 cats and it dont give a toss about them, even eats their food beside them

as said, find out if it does have a owner. if it doesnt then i dont see the harm in "adopting" the cat. gives it a warm place to sleep and most likely 2 good meals a day

Same as one of mine. Built a lean-to in the back garden and had a couple of Granny leather seats stored under there. This big black / white cat started sleeping on them, then started coming into the house, now stays. Even sleeps upstairs on the floor in the bedroom FFS. Very well fed and well-groomed when he appeared, yet no-one seems to own him.

Thanks for the replies

Thing is I don't wanna adopt it as such if it is someone elses cat, as thats not fair.... And in the same vein, I don't wanna adopt it, for it to not really be mine, but just be a "sponger" cat Don't wanna pay for feeding it etc and then the lil fucker just piss off and leave me

how strange

we have had the exact same thing happen, the cat has sort of adopted us more than anything

misses put a few posters up, nothing. she put a flea collar on it (dave as we named him) hasnt been removed so assume he is a stray

spends most of the day here now, sleeping

the other day he thought it would be nice if he gave me a gift (a mouse!)
was still alive, took his paw of it and the mouse run under sofa. me and dave spent the next 20 mins trying to catch it as the misses would have flipped
